I had a friend who used to buy and read the 'Guardian UK'.....he lived on a rural property some distance from town, and was paying him a visit one Saturady for a BBQ and while on the phone said is there anything I could bring him on the way out...he said 'yep...get us a Guradian and a packet of Camel smokes'.....when I arrived he was pleased with the bungers but very disappointed in the Shire's local rag I had bought him.."Guardian News"..a 2 minute read on local goss....not quite the same....well I said the Court Report is always good readin'..see who has their name in the paper with crime.

Dunno when your little anecdote re. the local rag dates from Spindrift, but there was a time when those local rags really were "local"!! For example my family took out Australian citizenship in Grafton back in the 1950s. It was the first ever naturalisation ceremony ever to be held in the Clarence River area so the local rag, The Daily Examiner did a big spread on it. When my parents had passed away in the 1990s and we were sorting through all their things (as you do!) we came across a very yellowed-with-age edition of the Examiner dating back to the mid-1950s with the report of that naturalisation ceremony. And what a gem it was. My Dad's speech was quoted in full, as well as the Mayor - that would have been the Mayor of South Grafton back then. I understand that Sth Grafton doesn't exist as a separate local government entity anymore. My Dad's speech was full of praise for the British monarchy - and that would have gone down very well in that community at that time, but the Mayor's speech was quite remarkable. He talked about our British heritage and quoted from the American Declaration of Independence without citing the fact that he was doing so. I suspect the poor guy didn't realise or understand the paradox! Anyhow, it was a good night and the local CWA supplied the cake and lemonade afterwards. Since I was a 10 year old kid back then I preferred the cake and soft drink (Zietsch's soft drink? Do they still exist up there?). The report of the ceremony was wonderful. Everybody got a mention down to the lady (a Mrs "Madge" Someone-or-other) who presented my Mum with a corsage she'd made herself. Other reports in that paper were about truly local events. A euchre tournament in someone's house in Ulmarra, a picnic to raise money for this-or-that worthy cause ... These were the days when there really was a rural press, before the Murdochs and the Packers got their hooks into these local rags: the Wingham Chronicle, the Manning River Times and so on. They really were a part of their local community and they saw themselves as journals of service and record. However, like all such things, they flourish for a while and then pass ... It's an Australia that no longer exists.

I am all for free speech so welcome this development. I also believe Fairfax should shutdown the Sydney Morning Herald, make The Age a national publication and fund it like The Guardian!

The Global Mail is good too, but they should not have registered a domain name with the word "the", it should have been globalmail.com.au.

Nice story Pim and the Grafton people were very welcoming to your family....changing times and to my own Naturalisation Ceremony was at a local church hall, after finding citizenship papers at the Post Office where I was working at the time, 1988...The mayor and his missus was there conducting events, alas no cakes, soft drinks or big speeches took all of about 20 mins... After the ceremony the mayor asked me how do I like Australia..?.. as if I was a new arrival, I explained to him that I have been in Australia since immigrating here in the 1960's, as a 6 year old kid with his parents who did not take out citizenship, and that I am simply changing citizenship for passport and travel purposes..I could see that explanation didn't sink in too well, not being the standard variety of new immigrant, and he asked me again with a big welcoming to oz smile how do I like Australia..??..I talked like an Australian, have been in Australia for most of my born days, an thinking no point explaining to this bloke my heritage and reasons for citizenship again..I said I like Australia and Australian people....it's just these white bastards I can't stand... the pommie family who were also receiving their citizen papers at the time cracked up laughing getting the joke while the Mayor just looked at me with a puzzled expression...WTF.. Locals here call me Greenpeace for my out spoken views I have expressed in the local paper and letters to Editor, I have a reputation and I maintain it. And made front page last year with a Moby whale sculpture that has been donated to a local public school, nice to do something charitable. Local Paper is owned by Rural Press as many local papers are owned by this company, in Oz and Overseas ...partnered with Fairfax recently. Zeitsch's soft drinks I haven't seen in quite awhile, it more as local manufacturers go Saxby's or Kirks soft drinks now, sugary and not to my taste...sput ding..!! Anyhow the Guardian UK is top class media..with so much to read and not enough time makes reading papers difficult, the weekend Fin, the local Guardian News and the free Observer that gets tossed into the driveway is enough...and a occassional sqizzy on the net at differernt media.

Awww how cute those stories of white settlers making a new home for themselves in Australia ... of course in the future there will be no place for white settlers in Oz, they'll likely be banned and declared a noxious species as the left joins forces with anyone thats not a whitey in order to stamp out conservatism. Even a head kicking African criminal is preferable to a law abiding white conservative if you're a lefty.

Now, all I need is a typically egregious posting from trailer trash caskur, and we can have dumber
