A man believed he was acting on God's orders when he killed his elderly father, who was hanging out washing, a court has heard.
Crown prosecutor Diana Piekusis told the Supreme Court on Monday that Slave 'George' Pedevski, 51, attacked his father, Risto, 79, with a claw hammer at the family's Yarraville home.
Ms Piekusis said Pedevski, who suffered from chronic paranoid schizophrenia and had not taken his medication for many months, had argued with his father over how he was constantly turning off the gas water system because he feared being gassed.
Pedevski's father told his son if he turned off the gas water system again he would report him to the police. Every time he turned off the system his father had to get a tradesman to come to the house to switch it back on.
Pedevski, who had an irrational fear of the police, pulled the claw hammer from a plastic bag and repeatedly struck his father to the head and neck.

Pedevski's mother, who had been inside the house preparing food before having a rest on the couch, became concerned when her husband, who needed a walking frame to get around, had not come inside from hanging the washing. She found him lying dead in the backyard.
Justice Michael Croucher formally found Pedevski, who is being held at the maximum security Thomas Embling psychiatric hospital, not guilty of murdering his father on November 23, 2014, due to mental impairment. Pedevski was remanded to appear again on May 2.
When later interviewed by police, Pedevski claimed his parents were living in Macedonia and he believed the people living with him at the family's Yarraville home were imposters.
Pedevski said he did not care about the person he had killed.
"It was his bad luck that he died and got murdered by somebody," Pedevski said.
Psychiatrist Dr Grant Lester told the court Pedevski had been suffering from paranoid schizophrenia for more than 25 years and had not been taking any medication for many months or even years.
Dr Lester said Pedevski was driven to kill his father by paranoid delusions, where he believed God was directing him to do things and the Devil was trying to grab his body.
Pedevski, who had refused to accept he had a mental illness, believed his parents were imposters who held negative or bad thoughts towards him.
Dr Lester said Pedevski's thought were so disorganised that he did not know right from wrong when he killed his father.
Psychiatrist Dr Lester Walton agreed with Dr Lester's opinion that Pedevski had been mentally impaired at the time he attacked his father with a hammer.
Ms Piekusis said Pedevski's mother would normally have submitted a victim impact statement but she passed away late last year.
