I recall a couple of years ago on a trip to Europe while in Holland the Dutch scuttlebutt over Benedict's abdication was that there was a child abuse scandal brewing that would reach right to include him and that this was unconscionable for the Roman Curia. He went because he had to go.
As for the Pickering thing, none of this surprises me. These revelations continue to rock the Church and they will go on doing so. It's a shakeout the whole child care industry has badly needed for the past 100 years. As Gillard said when she set up The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, words to the effect that "it will change us, it will change the country."
