Is Islam compatible with Western society, or is it completely at odds with it?
Have you ever met an Muslim who is fully integrated and assimilated?

There have been Muslims in Australia for a long time and they have been good citizens. The Ghan train is named after the Afghan camel drivers who helped open up the outback. The first mosque was built in 1861 so the history is long.

Is Islam compatible with Western society, or is it completely at odds with it? Do you regard yourself compatible with Wstern society Matt? With its secular values in which religion is relegated to the private sphere? Western society tolerates you, as it tolerates all sorts of loopy belief systems as long as they remain within the law. But I'm not so sure that you return that tolerance. As a matter of fact I've met lots of Muslims who are perfectly at home within this society. There are Muslim politicians, Muslim sportsmen, Muslims in business. On the other hand there's no shortage of Anglos who are downright dysfunctional and a menace both to themselves and the (Western) society within which they live. I can't hold a mirror up to you, Matt, because I don't know you personally and I'm inclined to be charitable. But with your nasty invective against religions and cultures that you don't like or disapprove of, with all your phobias - especially against gays, with your repeated calls for nuclear weapons to be deployed against large parts of the world inhabited by a quarter of the human race who happen to practise a religion that you abominate, it really does beg the question, doesn't it: how "fully integrated and assimilated" into Western values are you??

A friend is among many westerners who have converted to Islam ( I am fascinated, but am yet to ask why). He drinks no alcohol, doesn't eat pork, (unless the host was unaware and served it as a meal and will eat it out of respect), does his prayer ritual etc....and is gay. His partner is not a Moslem, but they still work well as a couple and have done so for over fifteen years. That would suggest to me Islam was not at odds with western living.

Hahaha....you remind me of many rednecks in NZ who proclaim, “I've got lots of Maori mates, but.....” and then they start of a tirade about uppity Maori who don't know their place in society.
