I saw Exodus: Gods and Men this afternoon. I was influenced by David Stratton in his final programme with Margaret Pomeranz. He'd said he'd thoroughly enjoyed it. He was entitled to his opinion but I have to say I don't share it. I think these remakes of the old 1950s Biblical epics are not a good idea.

Hmmm I wondered that too, Pim. The old ones are classics. Best leave them where they belong

So....yet another “god-botherer” movie?

It's more about CGI than god-bothering. In fact there's more biffo than bible-bashing and more graphics than god-bothering. Genuine god-botherers will hate it, atheists will be amused by it and everybody else will be bored by it. There's a loose (very loose!) connection with the Old Testament story of the 10 plagues of Egypt, "let my people go" and the parting of the Red Sea, in the same way that there's a tenuous connection with the movie The Hobbit and the novel written by JRR Tolkien. If it's god-bothering in a Hollywood epic of Moses that you want, then go back to the 1950s and Cecil B de Mille with Charlton Heston as Moses. Nothing beats Charlton Heston's Moses. Christian Bale doesn't even come close! He's pretty good on the biffo stuff, though! As for the CGI, I found it so-so and a bit of a yawn. Give me Charlton Heston stretching out his staff over the Red Sea any day!
