I had such an awful day today with a splitting headache, and my son was unwell and with a temperature. We took him to the doctor but the doctor said he was fine.
My brother also came over and told me he had been diagnosed with high blood pressure and now has to change his diet and start meds for it.
Tonight I opened the Bible, started to read, and came across this passage:
Romans 8
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
We must be of glad Spirit through both the good and the bad times, we must not complain, and we must endure. We should always be thankful to the Lord, because He will never test us beyond our strength.
My brother is one of those Jews, who just calls himself a Jew because he knows no different. Next time he is around I plan to share this passage with him.

Is that passage from the New Testament read to children after they are raped by priests? No. The Catholic Church does not encourage bible reading among its members.

Tell me something, Matty-boy?
How many times have you read the bible?
Usually, when I've read a book from cover to cover, that is it. I have read it so there is no need to read it again.
So have you ever read the bible from cover to cover?
And if you have read the bible from cover to cover, why do you continue to read bits of it over and over and over again?
Are you so thick/dumb that you have forgotten what you have already read?

KTJ, most practising Christians will read the bible over and over because it is considered a text book for life and requires study.

It is the living word!

The Bible is the worlds best seller and has laid the foundation for western democracies and much of the human rights we now enjoy.
What other book has lead the way in such positive change for the human race?

What other book has lead the way in such positive change for the human race? I think the foundation of western democracy was forged in Greece at a time they worshiped a pantheon of deities and early Christians were still hiding in caves. And if we can lay credit for the bible as a champion of human rights, why then did it take nearly two thousand years after it was written for that most fundamental of human rights, granting women equality and the right to vote ?

I think the crazy Koran would be threatening the bibles position there and for a rare endangered species like me ... ie an atheist conservative I have to say I'm starting to worry about where the hell I'm going to hide

The Bible is offered free, and these days is extremely accessible online. You can download it free on a Kindle.

Great work, Grim! Christianity began to slowly but surely transform societal attitudes. It was a difficult task given the Greeco-Roman influence where women were chattels ( except in Sparta ). Christianity's treatment of women was revolutionary, women could hold high position in the early church. Women could choose who they married, men were told to be married to one woman and be loyal to her - i.e. not have harems. Infant killing of girls was challenged against the current cultural mores. This movement was eventually societally successful and it can be clearly seen that the countries which gave women the greatest freedom where countries which had a strong Christian tradition. Christianity laid the foundations for many of the womens' rights witnessed today.

Well.....if you're desperate to locate some toilet paper, or something to blow your nose into, and the only thing around is somebody's bible, then yes, I guess it would become a desirable item to steal.

"Christianity laid the foundations for many of the womens' rights witnessed today. "
I put the credit to a rise in secularism, without which, we would still be binding women and throwing them in the river for daring to cure people with herbs and owning a black cat.

That practice ceased before secularism acheived the levels it has today. To judge Christianity on the worst excesses of witchcraft trials is hardly objective.

To judge Christianity on the worst excesses of witchcraft trials is hardly objective. So says the person who judges a religion other than his own for the worst excesses of some of the followers of that religion. The old "my god's dick is bigger than your god's dick" lunacy from one religious nutter aimed at other religious nutters. For faaaarks sake, Altair....it is now the 21st century. Grow some balls and stand on your own feet instead of leaning on the crutch of dark-ages clap-trap and delusions inside your own head.

Like judging atheism on the antics of Stalin and Pol Pot? That sort of objectivity?
