I saw the movie the other day. With a cast made up of people like Cate Blanchet, George Clooney, Bill Murray and Matt Damon you'd have expected a much more serious dramatic treatment of what is a pretty serious topic: the looting by the Nazis of the art treasures of Europe and the threatened destruction of the cultural heritage of the West - an issue that remains unresolved to this day with art works looted by the Nazis in WW2 still missing. It should resonate down to our times with the destruction by the Taliban of Afghanistan's pre-Islamic Buddhist heritage and the looting of priceless artefacts from museums in Baghdad during the chaos surrounding the fall of the regime of Saddam Hussein.
It was kinda entertaining. No bugger it let's not pussyfoot around: if you enjoyed rootin' tootin' old style WW2 action movies like The Dirty Dozen.(and I did) then you'll enjoy The Monuments Men. As long as you don't expect anything more analytical than The Dirty Dozen.
But is George Clooney another Lee Marvin? Is Matt Damon another Charles Bronson? I'll leave that up to you, I know what I think!
Oh, and it wasn't one of Cate Blanchet's better performances. She failed utterly to convince as a French curator.
