Saw it this morning, stellar performances from Firth and Kidman. Wonderful plot construction. Thought of my uncle/godfather who'd been a POW of the Japanese, and worked on the railway. But as I endured the gruesome torture scenes I couldn't help thinking that as I was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s we were given the message that torture wasn't something "our" side indulged in, and that torture was something nasty done by totalitarian dictatorships with outfits like the Kempetai and the Gestapo. The waterboarding scenes makes one think uncomfortably about what the Americans have been up to in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Abu Ghraib, Gitmo ... The halo has slipped somewhat and become tarnished.
