You blokes crack me up with the sledging....having read Tolstoy's rather droll soap opera 'Anna Karenina' in English it will be a major challenge to read it in Russian me thinks...heavy going and stoic stuff...what a challenge..

Must have a lot of time on your hands... Well....he needs to do something. It must be real boring spending all his time in that fortified bunker of his with only several pallets of baked-beans for company!

For its time the novel would seem quite advanced in its writing style..(wot ever that maybe..Pim would know)...to me it read like a melodramatic soap opera with the interaction between the characters Anna and Vronsky et al droll, like get over yourselves much like the Blair Witch Files one just wants to smack the characters around the head and tell em to wake up to themselves,..though I did find the observations on peasant life interesting and other historical facts on Russian law ....

The book has historical importance, and does show people are the same all over the world, love, emotion, drama and deep thinking about political stuff that could be about people of these times...greatest book ever...nah...not for me anyway.

Miffy isn't a cartoon! Do they have white rabbits in Siberia? I bet they do ... If white rabbits were good enough for Lewis Carroll and for Dick Bruna, then they should have been good enough for Tolstoy! And on Anna Karenina I saw the excellent BBC series back in the 1970s but I have to own up that I've never read the novel. I once started War and Peace but got lost somewhere between Borodino and the Retreat from Moscow ...

Putting aside my own opinion of the novel about the saga and melodrama of rich royal nobs, the book itself has attracted critical acclaim and many people were captivated and enjoyed reading Anna Karenina, and in some regard the writing sytle ahead of its time, which does make it a famous book...and in such can be called "a great work"...a Tolstoy a master writer..
