A court has heard the man who tied a hoax bomb around the neck of Sydney schoolgirl Madeleine Pulver had mood swings and an alcohol problem.
Paul Peters sat in the District Court dock just metres from his victim's parents, Bill and Belinda Pulver.
The 52-year-old has pleaded guilty to breaking into their home at Mosman in Sydney's north last year and strapping a fake collar bomb around the neck of their teenage daughter.
He also left an extortion note.
Peters' ex-wife, Deborah, travelled from her home in the United States to give evidence at the sentencing hearing.
She told the court Peters was difficult to live with towards the end of their marriage because he suffered from mood swings and had an alcohol problem.
Ms Peters said she had never asked her ex-husband why he did it.

"I don't know if even Paul knows why he did it," she said through tears.
"Paul is extremely remorseful that his has happened."
Ms Peters said that although they had divorced in 2007, she still considers him her life partner.
Dressed in a suit, Peters cried during her evidence.
One of the state's senior crown prosecutors, Margaret Cunneen SC, is acting for the DPP at the sentencing hearing before Judge Peter Zahra.
