When John Howard talked about the "long march" ...

... of the "soft left" through the nation's institutions everybody thought he was referring to educational institutions and of course the ABC. This was during a speech Howard gave at a dinner back in 2006 to celebrate Quadrant magazine's 50th anniversary.

Howard in 2012 would probably admit that he got it wrong in his 2006 speech, in the sense that his description of the "Long March" didn't go far enough.

If Howard were to give his 2006 "Long March" speech in 2012 hed say that the "Long March" of the dreaded "soft left" (Howard's term) hadn't just involved the hairy lefties taking over the nation's schools, universities and public broadcasters, they'd taken over the dictionaries as well!
