Batten down the hatches...and surfs up..
Erosion, floods and 100km gales to hit NSW19:13 AEST Thu Oct 11 20121 hour 16 minutes ago
People in beachfront properties along much of the NSW coast may have to relocate overnight, as the state braces for strong winds, heavy rain and dangerous surf.
The Bureau of Metrology (BoM) issued a fresh severe weather warning after 5pm (AEDT) on Thursday, for people in Sydney, the Hunter, the Illawarra, the South Coast, Southern Tablelands and the Snowy Mountains.
The low pressure system which is expected to move north to central parts of the coast overnight, is set to usher in wind gusts of up to 100km/h and localised heavy rain.
"Very heavy surf which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is forecast to develop for South Coast and Illawarra forecast districts Thursday evening, extending to the Sydney Metropolitan and Hunter forecast districts during Friday," the BoM said in a statement.
In light of the warning, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has asked people with beachfront properties to check their homes regularly, particularly in those areas where erosion has occurred in the past.
"If conditions worsen, and homes are at risk of structural damage or flooding from the sea, residents may have to relocate," SES Sydney Northern Region Incident Controller Tony Pinelli said in a statement.
"The NSW SES will assist with the protection of readily moveable household and business contents in areas where coastal erosion/inundation is occurring," he said.
People in the Illawarra and South Coast are also being warned that heavy rain may lead to localised flash flooding on Thursday evening and early Friday, an may possibly hit the Snowy Mountains and eastern parts of the Southern Tablelands.
Already on Thursday, the BoM said Ulladulla on the south coast has reported 143mm of rain, while further south at Burrill Lake 146mm has fallen.
Sheep graziers across much of the state have been warned of a high risk of losses of lambs and sheep, with cold temperatures, rain and southwesterly winds are expected on Thursday night and Friday.
Unusual weather for this time of year....
