, I googled public transport in NSW and also SA but nowhere on either of their websites did I easily find an emergency number to ring to alert the authorities in the event that I'm a passenger minding my own business and this sort of rubbish suddenly explodes in my vicinity. Don't know about Sydney or Adelaide, but on Melbourne's trains, each carriage has an emergency intercom link to the driver, for situations such as this. Interestingly, there was another incident on the Train last week, when an employee of the Justice Department, racially humiliated a Filipino immigrant, whose great offense was to ask that the Woman to move her hand bag off the seat so that She could sit down. Again, the young Students fellow passengers stood up to the appalling behavior.

<snip>.... so this BS about Aussies being racist is just crap and always will be crap. If some slings some shit at people ... it's them slinging shit and nothing more. I don't see a lot of racism with Australians? I live in a Sydney inner suburban street where the houses around us, in running order down one side, comprise Australian, Chinese, Uruguayan, Filipino, Australian, Egyptian, Brazilian, Greek, Indian then Greek; the other side of the road isn't much different. The Chinese have little to do with anyone, the Uruguayans and the Brazilians won't speak to each other, the Egyptians speak with the Greeks but despise the Brazilians, the Greeks will chat if you chat first (but tend to keep to themselves).... and the Australians chat with anyone! I'm sorry but my observations after living in this mini United Nations since early 1987 is that Australians seem to get on with anyone, I don't see a lot of racism from them at all. Now the Russians are moving into the area and starting to open small grocery stores selling Eastern European produce; I look forward to them adding a new dimension.

True enough, there are always people behaving badly no matter where you look, public transport included. If you could spend one day in the asylum you'd get some idea of how stressed out, mentally ill people behave and it's not pretty. But not everyone is locked up, there are plenty of people out there on the streets who have to take medication to control their behaviour. Sometimes they don't take it, sometimes they are reacting badly to the wrong dose. People with paranoid personality disorders can be very challenging. So I don't expect everyone to act nicely and politely on every occasion. People experiencing mental issues are on a short fuse ... factor in the medication angle and you will know what I mean. The main thing is that these people don't become violent. Inmates in the asylum generally can be quite physically aggressive - that's why they're locked up. They can't be nice socially responsible people. But there are a lot of out patients living in the community with mental issues. Often they have other problems, especially the substance abusers. Their social behaviour leaves a lot to be desired. They will say exactly how they feel about anything ... they have no conscience. I mean, it's hard enough for normal people living in the community ... they have the usual stresses of work, they may have lost their job, they might not be able to pay their rent or mortgage. They might be languishing on a housing waiting list. Their relationship might have broken up, they might have serious financial problems ... it's hard enough for them to hold it all together. But factor in a mental illness, then wait for the explosion. People with a mental illness will look at people from another country with suspicion and mistrust and see a challenger, someone who got their job, jumped past them on the welfare housing list, etc. And so they react. I know most of you lefties have no idea of the real world. You expect this, expect that. The rest of us are pragmatists - we know the real world isn't like that and isn't full of nice, mentally stable, responsible, socially adept people. Which is why I say "as long as all they do is rant ...." Personally I say just ignore them because if you antagonise them further by getting in their face, you'll just provoke them into a physical confrontation. In the asylum we ALWAYS walk away ... we NEVER confront! But here you are, expecting other passengers to get involved.

I work with people from every continent. I find that they do not always see eye to eye with each other. Generally I have found - like you - that Australians tend to be sociable towards all the other cultures whilst they have ingrained historical prejudices against one another. And Indians in particular will look down on their own people of a different caste. Generally I have found that most of them regard a light colour as being the epitome ... some Indians I've worked with have been very light in colour. They themselves look on the darker skinned Indians as being inferior. In fact I was quite surprised that they even mentioned it to me. It was much the same with the Asians. And don't tell me that Japanese and Chinese have any love for each other!!
