Everyone knows that the biggest problem the Liberals have is Abott as their leader.
Lets remember that he won the leadership by one vote and who was that extra one vote who helped Abbott to beat Turnbull? None other than his good friend, Peter Slipper.
Why don't you call for a spill as well, Tony? Or have your budgie-smugglers constricted your balls too much?

The biggest problem Labor has is Gillard. The best thing the Libs have going for them, is Gillard. Abbott is THRILLED by today's result, know that.

Abbott, PM or not, will be roundly despised for being the arsehole that he is...He even managed to stuff up yesterday's apology. I admit though I enjoyed immensely the shit and derision that the audience threw into his ugly face. It warmed the cockles of me 'eart, it did, bejesus........

You weren't thrilled, look at what you did! True. I have my own private reasons for that. Lets just say that people on here really don't know me at all. Or maybe I don't even know myself anymore. Sigh.

I think it is quite understandable that you could say,"...maybe I don't even know myself any more." Would you really even want to?

The question should be "does Krudd have the same size balls as Gillard?"
Apparently not, lol.

And watching all the Krudd backers falling on their swords this morning, another question arises ... when is Krudd going to do likewise!!??

A myopic view of what's happening by Pommies who think things are hunky dory down under only because their own economy is so f**ked.

'And all the while, Australia's government debt has been chipped at: surpluses have been delivered and real money squirrelled away to tide the nation through bad times'
No surpluses delivered ever by Swann. One only by Keating(in the early 1990's) the rest by Costello I think it was 6 or 7 but I will check if need be .
SO Costello did do plenty of good, and some very ill-informed comments on this board can now be put to rest.

Yes, Stockton - that's 3 As.

A government budgetary surplus of up to 2% of GDP?
Has not occurred under Swann's 4 years of stewardship IE 2009 onwards with 2013 also a deficit.
SO is this article written by some one who knows what they are on about, or is it party political spin supplied by the PM's 457 employee, McKerin (spl?), to his old mates.

Great quote from one of the readers:
She is unpopular because of the right-wing media in Australia, I don't remember them going on and on about Howard's broken (Non-Core) promises or his LIES about "Children Overboard". Seriously 5.4% unemployment, 3% interest rates Aussies are becoming a mob of whingers. The Australian electorate needs to worried about Abbott, he's so far right-wing that even former PM Malcolm Fraser has resigned from the Liberal Party.

Result: When Labor loses the next election....they cannot blame Rudd.
Funny in it, if a bloke had backstabbed Kev Rudd it would be doubtful the media and public would have been so critical as they were with Gillard for stabbin' him....Then for Martin Ferguson, Chris Bowen, and Kim Carr to resign smacks of something rotten in the Gillard camp and the people can perceive this.

They had to resign. It was the correct thing for them to do. Imagine if they'd stayed as Ministers, then every day they'd be asked by the media and the opposition to explain why they're members of a Cabinet led by a PM they'd declared no confidence in.
Don't misunderstand me, I have a lot of respect for Ferguson, Carr and Bowen. They had every right to support someone other than Gillard and they had the guts to stick their necks out and say so. But there's always a price to pay if it turns out to be a dud and they're paying it. They knew that and acted honourably and accordingly. I don't agree with you, Spindrift, that their resignations mean that there's something rotten in the Gillard camp. Oh, and BTW before I forget, I think Anthony Albanese has a lot of thinking to do regarding his own position. If he doesn't then Gillard will do his thinking for him. And Albo's no fool.
BTW I love that seamless little seque of yours into a Shakespearean reference. Classy! More, please!
The one I find interesting is Simon Crean. I have my own view on the why's and wherefores of his "bring it on!" act, but it's a subjective "gut" view with no evidence. But here goes anyway. I repeat, I have zero evidence for this but it's what I instinctively suspect is the case.
1. I think Simon Crean acted 100% on his own and his "I'll be voting for Rudd!" was a smokescreen.
2. I think he knew he'd be sacked from the ministry by Gillard. He did so deliberately and in a way that left Gillard no choice. I believe that in acting this way he was protecting Gillard from any accusations of skulduggery.
3. Crean's "Bring it on!" act flushed Rudd out into the open and it worked brilliantly. The "fact" (if it is a fact so I guess it's more a theory than a "fact"!) that someone like Crean was prepared to self-immolate in that way goes to demonstrate the depth of the feeling against Rudd within the party. Basically my take on what went down the other day is that Simon Crean strapped a suicide bomb to his chest and blew Rudd to smithereens - and, incidentally, himself as well.
Then there's Rudd himself.
I think the man is a disingenuous snake and I don't believe his protestations of loyalty to Gillard. I think he'll go on backgrounding the media and leaking like a sieve and the best thing Gillard can do in these circumstances is to have a complete makeover of her ministry to purge it of anyone associated with Rudd. It only has to hold together for the 5 - 6 months. Expect people like Amanda Rishworth to be given a portfolio. Amanda is the Labor member for Kingston which is based around Noarlunga, the southern outskirts of Adelaide. She has quietly built up her majority in her electorate from "marginal" to "safe" (she originally won it from the Liberals) and actually recorded a swing towards Labor in 2010. She now sits on a 13% margin making Kingston the safest Labor seat in SA.
Rudd's 2010 ouster was a mistake. I understand that in hindsight but that's not the way I saw it at the time. Politics is a brutal business and we've seen over the past few weeks both in Vic and the NT that the Libs can be just as ruthless with leaders who win elections for them as Labor. Whatever the rights or wrongs of 2010, it's history. Humpty Dumpty was pushed off the wall and all the King's horses ...
I'm being interrupted so I''ll have to come back to this later ...

I'm back, so where was I? Rudd as Humpty Dumpty having been pushed off the wall and lying in pieces of eggshells on the ground with all the King's horses and all the King's men finally accepting that they're never going to be able to put him back together again.
To think that Rudd will save Labor is as fanciful as Garfield's romantic notion that it's OK for Abbott to gain office as a policy-free zone because somewhere there's a starter button labelled "Howard Government" and all Abbott will have to do as PM is find it and press it.
Rudd is history just as Howard is history. The fact that Rudd hasn't accepted it should be a problem for Rudd to deal with all on his own. And that means sidelining him as much as possible. That's why decent people like Ferguson, Carr and Bowen had to fall on their swords. Rudd's career as Chief Destabiliser of the Gillard Government has to end. These ministerial resignations weren't a sign of rottenness in Gillard. The rottenness in this case is clearly with Rudd. Contrast the enmity between Keating & Hawke on the one hand, and Rudd & Gillard on the other. Rudd stabs in the back, Keating on the other hand came at Hawke from the front and made no bones about what he was up to. When Hawke was defeated by Keating, Hawke resigned from Parliament and gave Keating clear air. It begs the question about Rudd, doesn't it! The man should have resigned from Parliament in 2010 and not recontested his seat.

I have always considered Rudd an honourable man, but after what Crean has reportedly said, as published on the front page of today's SMH, perhaps he is much more deviously self interested and probably enmity ridden than I imagined. Once again Pim, a robust and thought provoking post.

Oh come on Pim, its so obvious Gillard and Crean were in on this together, even Stevie Wonder can see it. Many ALP supporters are saying the same thing, even some Professor in politics has come out and said Rudd was set up. Kevin did all he could ie text Crean to stop him, called Crean's office to stop the ballot to prevent this, and considering Crean must have known Rudd didn't have the numbers plus the fact that until recently Crean was a very vitriolic critic of Rudd and very much 'Team Gillard' its obvious this was a scheme between Gillard and Crean to destroy Rudd. Now, thanks to Gillard-Crean's plot, Australia has lost the best talent and elder statesmen in the party. All the talent is on the backbench because the power hungry bitch had to take revenge on Kevin being so popular and prevent him from coming back.
Also, the FACT that a recent poll showed that under Rudd, not only will Labor retain most of its seats, its likely to pick up an extra 3 or 4, thus delivering Rudd a MAJORITY GOVT, something this woman couldn’t do. Rudd is the difference between a devastating loss, and retaining govt with a workable majority. So for anyone to say Rudd wouldn't make a difference just shows how ignorant are out of touch with the facts they are.
The best thing for Labor would be a complete rout of the ALP on September 14. Gillard would have to step down as leader in face of the now certain and imminent devastating defeat, leaving Rudd to be elected unopposed as Opposition Leader and re-build Labor from the ground up. In light of the fact that polls suggest in Queensland that if Labor's ratings continues its slide or stays around its current mark, the irony of ironies is that Kevin Rudd is likely to be the ONLY Queensland Federal MHR left standing. In light of that, its obvious that come September 14, the party will look to Rudd this time with a stronger will and purpose.
