I doubt that consideration figures highly among people encountering Shakespearean plays. If you go to a performance of Hamlet with the Bell Shakespeare Company, or Julius Caesar with the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Globe Theatre in London, I very much doubt that the audience - who'd pay $$$ or £££ for a seat - would spend their time during the performance wrestling with the question of authorship. I've seen little kids enjoy Shakespeare. I went in a group of a couple of families to a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream in Canberra. It was a school performance put on by senior students so what it lacked in polish it more than made up for in enthusiasm. Some of the kids in our group were 5 years old. They were utterly spellbound, with eyes as round as saucers in that totally innocent and guileless way little kids have. |

I can just imagine the groaning from poor teachers too. I once worked for a nurse whose hubby was a school teacher... primary school teacher.. someone gifted him an encyclopedia set of everything supposedly written by Shakespeare... they had never read a word of the set and couldn't believe they had gotten it in the first place. yep, it's going to go down like a lead balloon. |
