Australians should be out in the streets protesting against Abbott's future policy of upping the ante on immigration big time to fuel growth for the big end of town profits.....Australians have become to complacent, while people like Flaggs holler over other countries Aussies just sit back and suck their thumbs and get steam rolled every time, such as increasing the retirement age to 67, the eroding of health and education, pensioners copping the raw prawn while the big end accumulate more and more.
Put your lollipop back in your mouth Flagg's and wake up to yourself.

Flag probably thinks he and his grand children are so much up in the capitalist class that they will be immune from the ravages of revenge that Abbott plans to execute on ordinary Australians, but I supect some of them will find themselves caught up in the policies of attriiton thet he and the Liberals have in mind for after the election. The carnage will not be limited to the citizens of Canberra.. You are right spin: the big end of town must be accommodated at whatever cost to the rest.

Australia's population has mushroomed over the past 100 years from 5 million at the beginning of WW1 to 23 million today. A little under 500% growth. I don't see that stopping any time soon and I don't see either party doing anything to stop it orslow it down. Even when they do try to slow it down it doesn't work. This country is on track to have 40 - 50 million people by mid-century no matter what any government of any political persuasion does. Remember that desperate line by the shockjocks and their hangers on in the Liberal Party of a few years ago, that Rudd had a "secret policy" to swamp Australia with millions of immigrants? It was bullshit, of course. This country has had a trend of rapid population growth, largely migration-driven, ever since the Gold Rushes of the 1850s and on on historical trends its population will get into the 40 - 50 million zone by the mid 21st century.
That means Sydney and Melbourne with populations of 7 million each and Brisbane the size of Sydney today. It means any political party that really has this country's future at heart will be talking seriously about infrastructure - water, power and transport.
The coalition have had a brain explosion about 100 new dams. Why isn't that being taken seriously? Whatever the source of fresh drinking water, desal is going to be a big part of it, and nukes are going to have to be part of the energy mix.
But I dare anyone on either side of politics to stick their head above the trenches to argue that case!

Hahahahaha. Well said.
Pim, a population growth from 5 million to 23 million in a century works out to be, according to my abacus, an average annual growth rate of 1.54% (3 sig figs). That's not a lot is it?

My maths was always hopeless, Grim, I cheerfully admit. Dunno why! That's the way it was I'm afraid. Are you saying that Australia, in experiencing a population increase from 5 million in 1914 to 23 million in 2913, has only experienced a modest population increase?

Pim, I don't know if a long term average population growth of 1.54% per annum is high, low or normal (it equates to a doubling of the population every 45.4 years). It just seemed low to me, then again I'm not a demographer. And stop calling me Grim otherwise I'll come up with some b&w negatives of you in a compromising position with two farmyard animals and a HSU National Secretary! (Very easy with Photoshop).

Have YOU ever seen how Americas immigration processing treated immigrants such as the Irish or worse-still the Italians, Casu? Dont even mention the Chinese workers on the Western railways. You leftys...the platitudes and slogans just get you every time, dont they? You cannot distinguish that from reality.

We are continually importing crocks who are not capable of working even if we had work for them, despite the white-wash we always get fobbed off with about so-called "Health checks.."

Why are we sending all our scrap metal to China?
Why are we going to let the Chinese have a HUGE chunk of the Kimberlies natural reserves to grow Veggies when a couple of cyclones will wipe out crops every season?...
Why is 80% of fish eaten here from China and banned in China because it's unsafe to eat there while our safe fish is sent there?
Why have the closed abattoir after abattoir in our country?
Why do we still have a million camels tromping down the landscape?
Why are the wombats starving?
There are more problems than they're solving.

Lyssaviruses are a group of viruses that includes rabies and Australian bat lyssavirus.
Australian bat lyssavirus is a virus carried by bats. It is related to, but is slightly different from rabies.
