This is Fraser Island - largest sand island in the world. Now renamed K'gari to appease the abos. I've been there a couple of times and the only way to do it is by 4WD. We went with my brother once in his 4WD and really explored the inland parts of the island. The dingoes were everywhere. Also went with my son and his partner in his Landcruiser ... it's great cruising along the sandy shore - the dingoes watch from the grass verges. They don't always venture down onto the sand but they can so you have to watch out. I'd just shoo them away if they got close and they're very wary of adults. But children - esp young children are a different thing. You have to have them with you within an arm's length at all times. The inland parts of the island are really great with all the creeks and lakes. This is Lake McKenzie - and I'm sure the abos will be pushing for it to be renamed until everything in Australia is abo. As to whether the dingoes belong on Fraser Island, yes they do. They are part of the indigenous flora and fauna. They just need to keep their numbers down and parents need to take more care of their younger children. ps ... the little kid who was mauled, left the tent where they were camping and ventured outside whilst the parents were sleeping. I'd say, do not camp with very young children - unless you are a light sleeper!!

I think it is irresponsible to camp with children on that island... they've put up fences.
People don't camp near waterways at the top end incase they're eaten by crocodiles.
The dingo issue is an emotive one... so I don't have much time for it. WHat do they eat there?

Not sure what they eat - but it is prohibited to feed them. There have been calls for feeding stations for dingoes where the rangers would feed them but that has been rejected I think.
You have to understand that dingoes are protected by the law. This is their habitat. We are the intruders into their domain.

They're just another introduced species. But let's say you are right...then that place shouldn't have tourists. Children are attacked there all the time.. this isn't an isolated incident. That poor 5 year old had no say being taken there.
