Everyone's invited to Jehovah's conferenceBy ANGELA CUMING - Waikato Times | 5:00AM - Wednesday, 09 January 2013DOOR KNOCKING: Doug Cochrane, right, visits homes inviting people to the Jehovah’s Witnesses conference this weekend that will be attended by 10,000 members. Ten thousand Jehovah's Witnesses are about to descend on our city for a major conference and the door knockers are already out in force to invite us along.
"We are heading out every day to knock on as many doors as possible to invite people along," said Hamilton Jehovah's Witness Doug Cochrane.
"We don't want to be pushy and most people are just politely taking the invitation and leaving it at that."
Jehovah's Witnesses will host a three-day convention at both Mystery Creek Events Centre and Claudelands Arena from this Friday. It will be the largest convention in Hamilton to date and will be the first time the city has hosted international delegates. About 750 international delegates from countries including the United States, Australia, Papua New Guinea and Samoa have begun arriving in Hamilton ahead of the convention.
They have joined local Jehovah's Witnesses in door knocking.
"We want to spread the word that the convention is open to the public," said Mr Cochrane.
"We have a little invite with all the details printed, it's quite brief. It doesn't matter what your religion or belief is, we'd love to see new people come along."
The 10,000 Jehovah's Witnesses will be equally split between Claudelands and Mystery Creek, with many families from out of town camping at Mystery Creek, while others will stay in the city's hotels.
That means a big boost to the local economy, said Jehovah's Witness spokesman Clarence Ririnui.
"This is our largest convention to date and with 10,000 people visiting over the weekend, it's a big boost for the local hospitality industry during what is usually a very quiet time," he said.
Accommodation in wider Hamilton was close to 100 per cent occupancy from Thursday, said Robyn Ward, a Waikato Motel Association member and co-owner of the Aquarius Motor Inn.
"We are fully booked from Thursday and I think that is the same for most other motels," she said.
The Jehovah's Witnesses were nothing if not organised, she said.
"All the booking were done last January and February - as soon as the dates of the conventions were announced the bookings were made, and most were paid up in full at the time of booking. They are nothing if not committed and organised."
Jehovah's Witnesses George Gray said the convention "took a bit of work" to organise and preparations had to be made well in advance. "But we are very used to this kind of arrangement."
Mr Gray is among those out door knocking with invitations, and acknowledges that some people are less than receptive to their advances.www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/8156087/Everyones-invited-to-Jehovahs-conference

KTJ, pull your head in. You spam the board with your phony "ultra left" nonsense but you're as bigoted as Skippy and as ignorant as Matt. You proclaim your so-called "leftist causes" in the comfort zone of an anonymous online discussion board, while Jehovah's Witnesses will proclaim their particular faith openly and wear the consequences. Here is an example of those consequences, from Sachsenhausen concentration camp: You've got no idea, have you? But then you'd never have your so-called "beliefs" tested in the way these people have and I doubt that you'd have their courage ... Since Charles Taze Russell's Bible Students group had formed after the American Civil War there was no formal position on military service till 1914, when the body came out against military service. Jehovah's Witnesses believe it is wrong to engage in violence, or to join the military. This religious doctrine of political neutrality has led to imprisonment of members who refused conscription (for example in Britain during World War II and afterwards during the period of compulsory national service). Persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses in Nazi Germany and their placing into concentration camps also revolved around their anti-military pacifism, which brought them in opposition to the military state of Nazi Germany. The Nazi government gave detained Jehovah's Witnesses the privilege to escape concentration camps, persecution and personal harm by signing a document indicating submission to state authority and support of the German military (..) The renunciation document includes the words:
"I will in the future esteem the laws of the State, especially in the event of war will I, with weapon in hand, defend the fatherland, and join in every way the community of the people."
Hence, Jehovah's Witnesses were called 'voluntary prisoners' Political and religious animosity against Jehovah's Witnesses has at times led to mob action and government oppression in various countries, including Cuba, the United States, Canada and Singapore.Like everybody else I occasionally (rarely!) have Jehovahs Witnesses come knocking at my door. I don't invite them in, I don;t accept their material and I let them know that I'm not interested in engaging them in discussion. But I do so politely and they accept my "No". I don't agree with their millenarianism, I don't accept their apocalyptic "end-of-days" cosmic view and I certainly don't agree with their views on blood transfusion. They also reject festivals like Easter and Christmas - which personally I think is very boring of them but Matt should approve. But with all those caveats I don't despise or hate them. They are principled people whose pacifism is deply felt and has been put to the test on many occasions - even under totalitarian dictatorships. That takes courage. So KTJ, I just want you to know that your grubby little post on the general board caling for Jehovah's Witnesses to be shot is evil. I wish you'd delete it.

So KTJ, I just want you to know that your grubby little post on the general board caling for Jehovah's Witnesses to be shot is evil. I wish you'd delete it. There is a bit of history between me and those Jehovah's Witnesses.
When I used to live in Gisborne, I was working a lot of night shifts, driving freight trains down to Napier and freight trains back to Gisborne. They were long 11-hour shifts. Around that time, the Jehovah's Witnesses used to regularly knock on my front door during daylight hours while I was sleeping. It wasn't just a gentle knock, but a really loud knock and when they didn't get an answer, they'd knock loudly several times over a period of several minutes. Which used to wake me up when I was only part-way through getting the necessary number of hours of sleep. On numerous occasions, I got out of bed and went and answered the door to get rid of them and was always very polite in explaining that, (a) I wasn't interested, and (b) that I was working night shift and didn't appreciate being woken up. My bedroom was at the front of the house, so I always heard them knocking. Yet the buggers took absolutely no notice whatsoever and continued to knock loudly on my front door whenever they were in the neighbourhood. There were two old girls who were particularly persistent, and eventually I started to get more blunt, but they still didn't take any notice. Eventually, I got really pissed off and used a few four letter words and told them exactly what I thought of them, but they still knocked on my bloody door during the day while I was sleeping between long night shifts.
One day, I was chatting to one of the chaps who used to drink at the same table as several railway workers at the local Cosmopolitan Club about the problems I was having with the Jehovah's Witnesses and how they were starting to really piss me off. This particular chap was a lawyer (a barrister, actually) who used to drink in the working-mens' club because he felt more at home there than at the snobby club the local District Court Judge and the local legal profession drank at. He explained to me how to go about drawing up a tresspass notice to serve on the Jehovah's Witnesses who were pissing me off and how to serve it on them (this chap is now a District Court Judge himself, and has been for about the past eight years). So I drew up a tresspass notice, naming as many of the Jehovah's Witnesses who had been knocking on my door as I could (I spent a few weeks doing a bit of digging to get their names) and added words to the effect of, “and all other members of the Gisborne Jehovah's Witness congregation”, then after supplying a copy to the local police force (as advised by my drinking-mate lawyer), I invaded a church service in the Jehovah's Witness temple and served the tresspass notices on all those concerned. I simply walked in right in the middle of a service and did it. And the buggers never bothered me again, but I was really pissed off that I had to go to those sorts of measures to get a bit of peace & quiet when I was sleeping between night shifts.
I've never had any time for Jehovah's Witness retards since. They are bloody pests who invade people's private property preaching bullshit.

KTJ, to save all that trouble a simple sign"Night Shift Worker Sleeping" may have done the trick.

It is a vile word and each time I see it used I lose more respect for the person using it......even worse when someone uses it to hurt me. I wonder about the mentality of peiple who feel the need to use it, knowing full well I have a very disabled (mentally and physically) son. Says a lot doesn't it.

Could've worn earplugs. But that would have been too simple, hey??
But that said, your "story" doesn't ring true. I've known a few JWs and they've been very polite, law-abiding, hard working individuals. If you didn't want to talk about religion they certainly didn't push it.

KTJ deliberately uses the word, knowing it offends Jody. It is a specific attack, not just being broadly offensive, but specifically offensive to a specific person and their situation.

It's a silly, juvenile term. People who habitually bandy it about tend to be mentally deficient themselves, however.

'Retard' is only a word. It's the intent and attitude behind it that gives it the meaning.
