I've just done it....I've cut myself from the copper-wire telephone network.
I just installed and set-up a mobile broadband connection which includes 120GB of data per month and unlimited phone calls throughout New Zealand without any toll charges and all my existing smart-phone features I had with the copper-wire network connection.
It costs me NZ$79 per month.
I can still use the wired phone network within my house by plugging it directly into the mobile modem.
The only downside is that if the power goes off, the phone network inside my house goes down, but I've still got a portable mobile internet modem I use when I'm away from WiFi, plus my mobile phone which I can use during power cuts.
Now I've just got to get brave enough to put in enough solar energy panels and wind generators (as well as battery storage and inverters) so I can eventually remove myself from the electricity grid as well.
Although that may be a several-years project if I do it.
