Just a query....who here has watched the television series “House of Cards” (the American program) and “Vikings”?
What do you think of them? Are they worth watching?
MightyApe has all series of both programs (BluRay) on heavily-discounted special at the moment, and I'm trying to decide whether or not to bite-the-bullet and purchase them.
I've got the complete British version of “House of Cards” on DVD (I watched it on broadcast television years ago) and really enjoyed it, but sometimes American take-offs of British programs can be crap, hence the reason I'm asking if anybody has any opinions of the American version of “House of Cards”; but I'm also interested in “Vikings”.

House of Cards...not bad, certainly helped by Kevin Spacey and Robyn Wright. I did get bored with it after the second series
Vikings, I am partway through season 3 and again, haven't been keen to get back to it
Watching 'Midnight Sun' on SBS ...very enjoyable

I'm told that there's a new series of the US "House of Cards" but the election of Donald Trump has put the kibosh on it: reality is stranger than fiction and all that. Normally I'd agree with KTJ about American remakes, the UK "House of Cards" is superb but the US remake works very well - that is until reality overtook it when a real force of darkness captured the White House. Have a look at the opening credits for the US "House of Cards". Both visually with the dark menace of the shadows enveloping Washington and also with the dark musical accompaniment, it could apply to Donald Trump equally as well as to Frank Underwood.
I've been utterly gripped by Vikings and have seen every episode up until now. It's coming to its end on SBS television in Australia with the invasion of Anglo Saxon England by the Great Pagan Army led by the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok to avenge his death. I have to agree that with Ragnar's death by being dropped into a snake pit (spoiler if you haven't seen that part - sorry!) something went out of the series. Rollo is now Duke of Normandy and the scene is being set for the struggle between Alfred the Great and the Viking invaders that sees the collection of small Anglo Saxon kingdoms coalesce into the Viking-dominated Danelaw based on York and Anglo Saxon England ruled by Alfred with its capital in Winchester. I'll be interested to see how they handle the character of Alfred as King. The English regard him as the true founder of the English nation and language. The climax of all of the series (I forget how many there are) has been the siege of Paris. The battle scenes are the best I've ever seen. Get it, KTJ. Get both of them.
I love the opening credits of Vikings too. The boats with the oars - wonderful.

I started watching the British “House of Cards” series again yesterday.
I watched it when it was broadcast on television many years ago, then a few years ago I purchased the entire series on DVD, but have never got around to watching it again. A couple of days ago, I was sorting through some BluRay discs and DVDs and discovered it, so last night I watched the first two episodes. I had forgotten how excellent it was, so I'm about to get into episode 3, and perhaps I may even watch episode 4 tonight as well. I'm currently on a five-day rostered long-weekend off (Friday to Tuesday inclusive), so I can stay up as late as I like.
MightyApe have still got the American version of House of Cards heavily discounted (all episodes released so far), but yeah, the election of Donald Trump as president has kinda changed things somewhat. I'm definitely going to purchase Vikings (all series so far), but I'll think about the American House of Cards. There is no way it could be as entertaining as what is currently real life at the top of the American political system.
In the meantime, I'm going to thoroughly enjoy watching the British House of Cards again after all these years since it was first broadcast.

I purchased all four seasons of Vikings available on BluRay about six weeks ago (they were at a discounted price again), but so far I haven't got around to watching any episodes.
However, earlier today, I received an email from Sanity in Australia about a 12-hour sale of DVDs and BluRay discs, so went and had a look at their website and a box-set of the first four seasons of the American House of Cards is going really cheap until midnight tonight (Oz-time), so I bit the bullet and purchased it. Normally, it takes about 4-5 days for purchases from Sanity to reach me in NZ, so I guess I'll see them sometime around the end of the week. As to when I get around to watching them, how long is a piece of string?

He at least owned his misconduct but should not have mentioned being drunk and using it as an excuse.

I started watching House of Cards just under two weeks ago and have so far power-watched four seasons. By the end of next week I'll have watched the lot.
I don't see any parallel at all between Frank Underwood and Donald Trump. Frank Underwood is really calculating about the dirty dealings he gets up to and he has a decent attention span, even though he's a real evil bastard. Whereas Donald Trump is just a narcissistic moron with the attention span of a flea. Frank Underwood would eat Donald Trump for breakfast.
And as for Vikings, the second-half of season five turned up today (I've previously watched all of it up to and including the first-half of season five), so I'll catch up with the most recent episodes in just over a week when House of Cards is done & dusted.
Waiting in the wings is the complete Untouchables television series from the 1960s staring Robert Stack as Eliot Ness (all 119 episodes). I watched quite a lot of episodes when I was a kid (it was on every Saturday evening in NZ right after Rawhide, then Hogan's Heros), but I've never seen the lot. I picked up a box set of the complete Untouchables a couple of years ago, but haven't broken the plastic wrapping off it yet; however I'll start working my way through it before too long.
