It’s no secret that we live in a golden age of documentaries, and they are consistently the better films at Sundance—consider last year’s completely brilliant The Queen of Versailles, arguably the breakout of the festival. Among the popular topics for American documentarians over the last few years: evangelical Christians, who seem to inspire a mix of curiosity, sympathy, and repulsion among a certain cohort of Sundance-bound filmmakers. Jesus Camp, which was nominated for an Oscar, is perhaps the most notable of these films; it told the story of summer camps for evangelical children. God Loves Uganda, which premiered on Friday at Sundance, is more disturbing: It documents the efforts of evangelicals to export America’s culture war to Africa. Missionaries, of course, have been going to Africa for centuries now. What’s different is an effort not just to bring Jesus to Africa, but the entire political agenda of the American conservative movement. They’re not just bringing the message that “Jesus saves,”  but a raft of positions about which Christians may disagree: abstinence over birth control, adoption over abortion, and, most disturbingly, the complete eradication of any trace of homosexuality from society. Director Roger Ross William’s film is centered on Uganda and the activities of the International House of Prayer, a vehemently anti-gay church headquartered in Kansas City.* The church preaches that homosexuality is a sin that can be resisted and even cured by prayer. According to the film, the church has helped to foment a new level of hatred and violence against gays in Uganda. The film alleges, in fact, that the church, along with similar groups, led Ugandan politicians to introduce a law (the “Kill the Gays” bill www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2012/12/ugandas-kill-the-gays-bill-back-in-limbo.html) that would make it a capital offense to be gay, and inspired the murder of David Kato, a gay rights activist. The story God Loves Uganda tells is damning. Director William, who grew up in a religious household, said he is “fascinated by both religion and its power to do evil.” It is, nonetheless, worth asking whether the anti-gay views of the American church can be so clearly blamed for what is happening in a society where homophobia was already prevalent. And the documentary vacillates between a heavy-handed depiction of crazed, hateful cultists, and a more earnest effort to chronicle the lives of well-meaning American missionaries. But somewhere in there is a sharp message, delivered best in the film by Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, who asks which part of the Christian gospels calls for evangelizing hatred? |

<sigh> you're being tedious and boring, Buzz ...  There are other issues in this thread than God's family tree or the historicity of Jesus or the finer and more abstruse features of Christology. I happen to know people (I won't elaborate) who are mega pain-in-the-arse god botherers and in-your-face happy clappers, former Catholics who have gone into the Pentacostalist business. Matt would love 'em, I find them exceedingly tiresome, naive, full of wide-eyed gee-whizz "Praise the Lord" breathless happy talk who have also done the missionary thing in Uganda. They can't leave the "God" thing alone so you can't even engage in small talk with them. These are the sorts of people who would go into a cultural hot spot basket case like Uganda and bring all their bible bashing cultural baggage with them. Whats really funny is the left squealing about a few harmless christians spreading their crap while remaining tight lipped about al qedas expansion into Africa.

This evangelical movement is displaying the height of cultural arrogance and disrespect here. What makes them think they can traipse all over Someone Else's country to impose their view on others ? No one has a mortgage on righteousness, least of all them.
However, what's disturbing is that these guys are feeding off peoples ignorance. It's very insidious; this tactic of exploiting peoples ignorance to gain influence. It's very similar to the way that the 'Tea-Party' exploits peoples ignorance to gain it's influence. They have been so successful at it that they have effectively taken over one of Americas major Parties. It's not surprising that the evangelical movement makes up such a large part of the wider 'Tea party' movement, you could almost argue that the evangelical movement, and other pentecostal/southern baptist denominations, spawned the 'Tea-Party'.
It's not just ignorance these people feed off; they feed of fear, they feed off loathing, they feed off greed, and they feed of vanity.
There seems to be a new intensity in the way that these groups are almost worshiping ignorance etc, that I have never seen before, its quite scary, when you spend any time observing it.

The only Scientists that argue that AGW is not occurring are those that are employed by lobby groups like the Heartland Institute. If I were you, I wouldn't be relying on their expertise too much. They are the same Scientists that argue that there is no link between Smoking and Lung Cancer. Only a complete Twit would believe those Scientists. But do carry on, you're such an expert Twit. |
