Ya gotta love the way Matt blithely makes these gratuitous unsourced and agenda-laden pronouncements. . It is true, and if you did your research, you'll find Saudi Arabia builds mosques in Australia, and for some of the most extreme elements.

<sigh> I guess Matt really wanted this thread to be about Muslims after all. The bit about churches paying company tax was just a cover for a Muslim-bashing agenda. Ho hum.

Oh I see ... muslims are not to be discussed or criticised at any time and are definitely off limits as a topic on NTB1.
Same old, same old ...

However, discussions do evolve, new points of view are introduced. Stellar had every right to introduce Islam into the topic, because it is a legitimate point.

If any crank wants to set up a rort and con to fleese people of their money - he calls it a religion and is exempt from tax. Clearly all religions are rorts but one like Mormons and Scientologists are extreme examples of tax exempt religions. A religion is a business that earns money and should pay tax. End of story. Their members already pay tax.

Of course they should pay tax..they are run as businesses. Perhaps the tax they pay will help fill the shortfall in government provided human services.
Furthermore, why should the government protect the rights of an an organisation that doesn't pay tax to discriminate in employment based on belief and culture while prosecuting those who do pay tax whenever they cross the discrimination line?
( I posted this without reading posts above...sorry if I statue what has already been said)

So it's "muslim-bashing" to to include Islam in the list of religious organisations expected to pay company tax?? Honestly, your prejudices really are astounding ... we can demand Christian organisations that actually do some good in the community to pay company tax. But the same demand for the Islamic religion to do likewise is met with derision and "a cover for a muslim-bashing agenda?" Really, I'd expect better from you.

So it's "muslim-bashing" to to include Islam in the list of religious organisations expected to pay company tax?? <sigh> No Stellar that's not what I was saying at all. I'm puzzled Stellar, where on earth do you get the idea that that is my position? You're literate, your grasp of language is superior to the vast majority of the contributors on the board, and you express yourself lucidly. That Garfield should come onto the board with his calumnies and agenda-laden brain explosions is one thing. And the fact that Salem can be relied upon to make grand pronouncements that are as ludicrous as they are preposterous is just par for the course. Garfield seems to enjoy his role as court jester and you can always tell when Salem has neglected to take her medication. But you're different. You're lucid. I mostly don't agree with you but that's neither here nor there. I know when I read one of your posts that, agree with it or not, it's going to be written by someone who understands the meaning of words and how they're put together to form a coherent sentence. I don't think either of us is looking for an echo chamber. So what is it with these distortions and misrepresentations? Interesting that you should say so, Stellar, because I'd expect better from you!!

OK ... I don't know much about Catch the Fire. But I reckon they'd be a pretty small outfit with few resources. Unlike the mussos! Who, as we all know, are quite adept at raising funds ... but not for any charitable works here in Oz! As for paying taxes ... well it depends I suppose on how many assets they are accumulating in their "not for profit" activities. I think the Christian churches are fairly good at providing for the whole community whatever ethnicity. That cannot be said for the mussos whose only charity extends to muslims either here or mainly in the Middle East. Not quite correct Stellar. "TEN cyclone shelters will be built in north Queensland after a $30 million donation from the Emirati state of Abu Dhabi." www.theaustralian.com.au/in-depth/cyclone-yasi/the-emirates-will-donate-30-million-for-ten-cyclone-shelters-in-north-queensland-after-devastating-cyclone-yasi/story-fn7rj0ye-1226052591130"THE Muslim Charitable Foundation (MCF) has donated several pallets of gyprock to help with the building recovery effort across Ipswich. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said enough gyprock to repair 50-60 flood damaged homes would soon make its way to property owners most in need. “On behalf of the community I want to thank the MCF for making such a tremendous contribution to assisting flood-affected families throughout Ipswich and south east Queensland,” Cr Pisasale said. www.qt.com.au/story/2011/04/20/muslims-lend-hand-to-flood-recovery/

Why blame Matt for bringing Islam into the thread, Pim? Why say that Matt "really wanted this thread to be about Muslims after all" when you know he didn't even mention muslims in his OP? You know that I brought it up - and not as part of a "muslim-bashing agenda" either, but simply to point out that Christian organisations do a lot of good in the community but I have never heard of the Islamic religion raising funds for anything other than muslims fighting jihad overseas.
I agree that neither of us is looking for an echo chamber and that's a good way of putting it - and I certainly wouldn't expect it from a leftie but "distortions and misrepresentations?" I guess it keeps coming back to this alleged "muslim-bashing" agenda. I really do give up. It's just not worth discussing it any further. You and the other lefties have closed your minds to any criticism of Islam or muslims. You won't discuss it rationally. There always has to be an "agenda." You won't allow anyone to bring up the topic without becoming outraged and going on the attack. It is becoming very tiresome and quite frankly I'm over it.
Stalemate, I guess.
