I can see where this is going ... This is a bipartisan issue, Stellar. I'm not saying there aren't scams and I'm not trying to gild the lily here. But Chinese students are so numerous in Australia, and they pay so much in the way of fees, that the cash flow that results from this student inflow has become central to the way Australian tertiary education in funded. And that has been just as true under Howard as it has been under either Rudd or Gillard. And it will be just as true under Abbott. Anyone who tries to make political capital out of this in some sort of "Liberal - YAYY/Labor - BOOO" way is spreading snake oil.
Now Pim ... I said "the govt" and I didn't designate any particular govt. I agree that it will be the same under any govt.
We have a population of around 23 million - not 16 million.
I am well aware of that!! I was trying to point out (not so well I admit) that our sustainable population is 16 million. I should have made that clearer.
The constituency that most enthusiastically supports high levels of immigration exist within the business community. And they are colour blind. Any government of whatever political persuasion that halts high levels of immigration to Australia is going to be condemned by the business/economic lobby for acting in a way that will do serious damage to Australia's economy. And Australian governments will listen to that.
True ... and how is that ever going to help population control and a declining birthrate? At the very least we should give the baby bonus the shunt. Only married working women should get it, not welfare addicts.
By all means vote against the atheist devil woman with her layabout fancy man whom you despise - and in favour of the activist supporter of the global paedophile conspiracy (don't blame me for that characterisation - ask Matt!!). but if you think that by voting against the devil woman and in favour of the tyke god botherer you're going to be voting for lower immigration then I have to tell you you're going to be disappointed.
Remember this ... I don't vote for either of them!
Australia federated in 1901 with a population of 4 million. If you look at the rate of population growth since then, and which we're continuing to have, we'll reach 40-50 million easily by mid century.
By which time we are going to be in big trouble!! I'm glad I won't be here to see it.
And by the end of this century, at the rate of population growth Australia has sustained consistently since Federation 112 years ago, our population will easily have surpassed Britain's population. And it will be a very Asian-looking population. May we live long enough to love and hug our Eurasian great grandchildren. Welcome to the future.
My younger son's girlfriend is Chinese Malay. She is beautiful, intelligent, petite, speaks 5 languages, has a double degree in finance and economics, has beautiful manners and is so polite and caring. And is a Christian!
What more could I want??
