Today I was at a cafe getting my morning coffee and this homeless woman was in front sorting out her change.
I felt compelled by the spirit to tell the cafe servant that I would pay for mine and the woman. I was literally compelled by the spirit.
I felt incredibly uncomfortable because charity should be done in silence. To step in and offer isn't silent. The woman knew, the cashier knew.

And now we know. Why do we need to know?

Dunno about "compelled by the spirit" ... I would simply call this kindness.

A cafe servant? I can understand a barista or a cashier .... but a servant!

Stellar brings up a valid point, not just of vocabulary but the social layers of meaning in “servant”. And Mad Matt doubles down on “servant”. Says it all

Says it all I think it is an appropriate word for a cafe worker. While in the cafe they are serving. I don't really care about what the unionist in you believes.

It’s ok Matt, we get the politics. You’ll just go on doubling down because you feel you have to. But for the record it’s not about unionism. Very likely she’s a part time casual worker on shit money and they tend not to be unionised. If they were you’d feel appalled as your pathetic little attempt at a sneer makes clear. No, it’s to do with the law as it relates to employment and working conditions. Or what’s left of them in the gig economy. They’re called “employees”, Matt. But hey keep doubling down on the “servant” thing. I do so enjoy it when you give yourself away at every turn.

Let me get this straight: ...So you lament that charity should be done in secret, and your solution is to let even more people know of your charitable act? ...You didn't really think this through did you, Matt?
