"Nobody should be sacked for making a stupid comment"
Yes they should when that stupid comment proves that they are stupid.

Sacking Alan Jones might be difficult Hugely wealthy and influential people like him aren't employed by their stations; it's more like the other way around. I'm afraid he will be with us for a long time.

I twittered ABC 24... Alan Jones was insensitive but he didn't say it to Julia Gillard's face, the media reported it so THEY and THEY alone are culpable for any hurt feeling and they are blowing it out of proportion in a media beat-up of Jones so people will feel sorry for Julia... Johnny Howard was CONSTANTLY being beat-up for being a "little man and a liar" over the children overboard.... you know, does the leftist media think we're all dumb out here in tv-land or something?
The media are pathetic

And as far as Alan Jones so called misogyny goes… I remember he was one of the people who went to bat for Pauline Hanson when she was wrongfully jailed.

Everything has a use by date, Jones has reached his, I'm happy to see that free speech and public opinion has finished Jones off instead of the stalinist model Gillard and her f#ckwit followers would have preferred.

garfield I think I can vaguely make out that there's a point in among all your rhetoric and sloganeering, and I kinda agree with you (hedged with all sorts of caveats and reservations!) about free speech.
If you think that the issue of free speech versus political correctness policed by a stalinist thought police is part of a broader Labor v Liberal thing then I part company with you on that one because it goes a lot deeper than that. Labor and Liberal resemble each other a lot more than either side is prepared to acknowledge or be upfront about.
It comes down to accountability doesn't it. Governments that feel free to do as they please and who believe themselves to be accountable to no one end up being corrupt, dictatorial and out of touch and alienated from ordinary people. And they threaten free speech. We saw that with the Bjelke Petersen Government in Qld just as we saw it with the revolving door Labor governments in NSW. I think we're catching a glimpse of it in SA with a Labor Government that should be thrown out except for the fact that the SA Libs are a shambles who can't get their act together. I dunno if you heard of the former SA Labor Treasurer Kevin Foley. A prick. High handed, thought he knew better than everyone else, arrogant, full of himself - pick an adjective, any adjective, it describes Kevin Foley. We've all heard of these sorts of politicians. It's what happens when the other side is too piss weak to hold them to account.
Not so sure if that describes the federal scene. The Opposition is the most powerful opposition I've ever seen. Do you really think Tony Abbott isn't holding Julia Gillard to account?
Thing is, garfield, if you're really trooly rooly seriously and in good faith genuinely interested and concerned about the issue of free speech without seeing it as a part of some sort of "Liberal - YAY! / Labor - BOO!" agenda then you'd have to agree that the sort of society that you and I live in, which is a liberal democratic society with a regulated capitalist economy, ultimately the size of the State that exists to service this economy, with its huge bureaucracy, and the media culture with its 24 hour media cycle that seems to be developing, in themselves constitute the biggest threat to free speech.
Don't be shallow, garfield. Not if you're serious about this issue. And as a PS, if you really want to be taken seriously on this issue, why the "LOL" in your thread title? Do you really think ther comments about Gillard's late father were funny and in good taste?

And it's goodnight from us ... what the sponsors said Telstra on its Facebook page: We take matters like this very seriously in relation to public sentiment and the reputation of our brand. Telstra will not support the Alan Jones breakfast programme. Coles on Facebook: We share your view that the comments made by Alan Jones were insensitive and we have taken action to suspend all advertising on Alan Jones' show. This suspension was effective as of 10am this morning. Dilmah on twitter: We reject as inappropriate Alan Jones' comment about the PM's late father. We are suspending support. ING Direct on twitter: ING has removed any advertising on the Alan Jones show on 2GB as of Monday 1 October. Bing Lee on Facebook: Does not condone the comments made by Alan Jones and will be removing all advertising from his programs going forward. Woolworths on its own Facebook page: To be clear, we do not and have not recently sponsored this program. From time to time we have had advertising during this program, however, this morning we have made a decision to suspend this advertising. We've acknowledged that a staff member, in a private capacity, attended the Young Liberals function where Mr Jones made some offensive comments about the Prime Minister. Woolworths in no way supports the comments made at that function. We thank you all for your feedback. Mercedes-Benz on its Facebook page: Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific has instructed its dealers to cease any form of advertising on the Alan Jones show as our company does not condone such inappropriate comments. Freedom on its Facebook page: In light of our customer feedback, and after internal review - we would like to confirm that Freedom has withdrawn advertising from 2GB. Lite'n'Easy via Facebook: We do not support or endorse the comments made by Alan Jones and we are not a sponsor of 2GB or Alan Jones. Thanks to your post we have investigated this matter further and we have since discovered web based advertising that randomly runs across variance media outlets (such as 2GB). We are currently in the process of removing this web based activity. Harvey Norman via twitter: We value the feedback here and have escalated these comments to management. lol Just look at the media depicting Jones in the post above... they love doing that... they do it to women all the time, the big hypocrites,.........
some of you people here are donkeys.. you are also cowards and don't stand and support free speech... you think this is some type of victory when in fact it's a Pyrrhic victory.
Julia did lie to win the election... Her government is a minority government that made empty promises to independants. Labor is ruining the country. Our governmet is a farce, sadly...
I bet you've all forgotten people dying in fires because of the home insulation scandal that burned down many houses... and children of unskilled Indian immigrants up on those rooves without protective clothing on helping these unskilled shitheads who were using child labour.
Julia's recent bereavement is very sad for her and she would be in considerable emotional pain from it that will last a long time... how she can keep soldiers in Afghanistan all this time now that she feels the agony of grief herself, is beyond me....
If Alan Jones has been sacked for committing no crime on radio, he should go to the unfair dismissal council.... haw, haw haw..
Every night on TV we're lied to...
If you don't like "shock jocks"... there is a thing called an off button... use it!
If you don't like what they say, ring up and tell why...
that's what democratic people do, simpletons!

Fair enough. He is a buffoon who takes himself a tad too seriously. It's what happens when people start believing their own propaganda and they start believing they are incapable of error. i think it's called "hubris". It ends up biting those who catch it on the bum.
What a shame you only picked out that bit out of my post and didn't respond to the other stuff about free speech. Personally I think you're on to something. The problem is it gets smothered by all the bogan rock ape stuff you come out with and that gives others an excuse to sledge you instead of debating you. So if I'm the only one who basically disagrees with you but is prepared to peel away the bogan bullshit in an attempt to come to grips with what I think you're actually trying to say, you won't respond.
Pity ...

You ARE Equils! So all your bullshit about free speech comes down to your "Liberal - YAY / Labor - BOO!" stuff. Liberal = free speech and Labor = anti free speech. That's what you reckon. Have I understood you correctly?

Well if it comes down to which political party is freedom of speech the safest under then yes the Liberal party is the winner. We've seen gillard try to introduce a number of restrictions on free speech, including the internet filter. Its well known that the left is more prone to government interference not just on free speech but on just about anything.

Got to laugh at these wankers pulling their advertising, by pulling their advertising they are actually advertising even more by saying look at us we are wonderful, we're pulling our advertising from this pricks radio station what fantastic corporate standouts we are ... please remember that and buy our products ... but by this time next week the whole thing will be forgotten and they'll all slink back, only now they have captured all the Jones haters and all the Jones lovers with their advertising campaign, 100% market saturation ... very clever . ;D

I wouldn't say it'll all be forgotten by next week, but it'll be in the dustbin of history in a couple of months and you'll find that those corporate outfits will be advertising with Jonesy again. As often happens with Equils, somewhere underneath the bullshit, the hyperbole and the bogan language there's a valid point.
This will pass - and the corporate advertisers, and Jonesy, and 2GB know it.
Only one thing that Jones can't stop, and that's the fact that he's 71 and turns 72 next April. That sort of stuff heads in one direction and it ain't backwards. But not to worry, there's lots of shock jocks coming up behind him.

Coles and Woolworths LOL, how many farmers and small business's have those c#nts destroyed over the years, what a nerve no shit! , the hysterical baying minority mob is a powerful one though, and the corporates must feign outrage, imagine if the screaming mob got this excited over a dairy farmer hanging his self due to woolies screwing him to the wall over milk prices maybe they'd stop f#cking everyone over ... naaah never gonna happen.
