Not bad. Hilary Swank is no slouch in acting ( Million Dollar Baby was perhaps her best work? - was that down to great direction from Clint Eastward?) Anyhoo ... The first mission to Mars with Swank as the mission leader and the various back-stories of the crew. Some glaring issues with the sci-fi ... e.g. takes off her helmet before the re-pressurisation is complete? Some "weird" movement around the inside of the Lunar Base etc ... Still, pretty good so far ... up to episode 4. Mark Ivanir : the guy who plays the irascible Russian (Misha Popov) is good. It's a bit over the top in the schmaltz department.

I've seen this come up. Might need to add to the list Dunno Grim, I watched it. Mixed bag. On the plus side it has what they call these days “good production values” in the quality of the actual footage, the lighting, the sound, the costumes etc. So there is stuff to like in it. My problem with it is that it descends into American schmalz and in the end it’s just another soap opera. I’m sorry but I just can’t find interesting the expedition leader’s middle class American guilt trips over being leaving her teenage daughter in the care of her disabled husband while she leads the first expedition to Mars. Not to mention the personal demons of the other crew members. I guess I’ve been spoiled by the Netflix series “Mars”. Much better! I guess the real 21st century question is will you be able to get Netflix on Mars?

People going to Antarctica for six months undergo rigorous psych testing to see if they would cope. I find it doubtful a woman with lingering family issues and the mental stress from it would even be considered for a Martian trip let alone be the expedition leader. That's what annoyed me about the Ridley Scott Alien/Prometheus movies...a bunch of smoking, misfit cowboys on an interstellar space mission? Implausible. I will give Mars a look in though, thanks

Kim Stanley Robinson wrote the definitive novel on Antarctica. You’ll be amazed to hear that its title is Antarctica. To be honest it’s probably the only novel ever written about Antarctica. The genre is sci fi. Robinson might have called it “future history” which is a contradiction in terms but what distinguishes it from sci fi/fantasy is that it sets out to be technologically and sociologically realistic. Robinson succeeds, I think, but to a fault in that he over eggs the techno side and makes the narration too dense. Nerds and geeks might appreciate it.
I think Robinson succeeds much better with his Mars Trilogy which is a collection of three novels dealing with a project that begins in the latter half of the 21st century of colonising and terraforming Mars. The novels are called Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars. I realise people are much more into streaming a TV series than reading a book these days but if you’re a Luddite who still enjoys poking your nose into a good book then the Mars Trilogy is a good read. The author aims for technological realism and there’s plenty of that but since the narrative extends over three books there’s enough scope for the writer to drill down into the characters and develop an interesting plot. If you enjoyed the “Mars” series on Netflix, and I really do believe it to be far superior to the shmalzy “Away” pap, you might well enjoy the Mars Trilogy - especially if you enjoy a good read!

Ah! the good ol' Mars Trilogy ... I read those back in the early 1970's
Recall someone falling over and smashing his space helmet - falling into an outcrop of "oxygen weed" ? Something along those lines.

This was brilliant. They never show it on TV and I don't know why. Enemymine.

Well, I finally got through to the end of this series of Away. Ten episodes. I think it might have been funded by some religious group(s) since the religious aspects were laid on with a trowel at some points. Must admit that it did raise a tear to the eye a few times. (No, not because of bad acting!) Definitely a personal drama rather than a Sci-fi.
