Did youse fellas miss me?
I've been totally & completely “off the grid” for sixteen days/fifteen nights. No internet, no mobile phone service, no landline phone service, zilch, nothing, zero. I've been indulging in something which has been on my bucket list for a couple of decades, but which I thought I would never get around to doing. Something which has always had a hideously-expensive price tag, but due to the lack of overseas tourists, has become available at a bargain price, although still fairly expensive.
On Thursday, 30th July, I had a leisurely breakfast at a cafe down the road from my place, then caught the mid-morning train over to Wellington and headed to the airport, then flew down to Queenstown. After spending the night at Frankton (in the vicinity of Queenstown Airport), I got picked up by bus the following morning (Friday, 31st July) and transported to Te Anau, where I boarded a floatplane with three other people and got flown to Poison Bay (an inlet just to the southwest of Milford Sound) where we joined the “Fiordland Jewel” for a huge adventure exploring all of the Fiordland coast and fiords except Milford Sound, the northern-most of the fjords. There were sixteen of us on the cruise, delivered to Poison Bay and the boat by the floatplane doing four trips.
Over the following sixteen days/fifteen nights, we gradually worked our way south and explored all of the coast and entered every fjiord, spending a few days in the biggest. From north to south, we visited Southerland Sound, Bligh Sound, George Sound, Caswell Sound, Charles Sound, Nancy Sound, Thompson Sound, Bradshaw Sound, Doubtful Sound (we spent two nights in there), Dagg Sound, Breaksea Sound, Dusky Sound (that one is HUGE with so many arms and passages and channels that we were in there for three nights), and Preservation Inlet & Chalky Inlet (which like Dusky Sound is HUGE with many passages and three distinct fjords off it, resulting in us being in there for four nights).
The boat got resupplied by floatplane three times over the past fortnight and a bit and this morning we were uplifted from Long Sound (part of the Chalky Inlet maze of fjords) by helicopter and flown back to Te Anau. I took zillions of photographs over the past two-and-a-bit weeks, but they are all raw files and its going to take me many months to work my way through them processing them, reviewing them, then deciding what to keep and what to discard into an archive. You'll get to see some of them eventually, but it will be quite a while. Possibly by the end of the year, otherwise sometime next year.
In the meantime, I've uplifted a rental car from Te Anau and am about to drive to Milford Sound where I'm spending the next four nights, simply relaxing at the end of the earth. So I'll be mostly going off-grid again (there is internet access at Milford Sound, but it is via satellite and is hideously expensive). Next Wednesday morning, I'll be driving from Milford Sound to Queenstown Airport, dehiring the rental car and flying back to Wellington, then on the train heading home. Then, reality in a week's time when I have to go back to work (and my email inbox is clogged with zillions of emails … aaaaaaargh!!!).
And you've no doubt heard that there has been a resergence of the virus in Auckland while I've been off-grid and Auckland has been put on partial lockdown. The rest of the country has some restrictions, but you can still do things. It's been a good time to be in NZ's great wilderness area.

And here's me thinking you might have rejoined the mother ship that's been hiding behind an asteroid ...
