Problem is that Beirut is very densely packed with no spare land. I wonder if there will be a "directive" here in Oz to make sure that Ammonium nitrate is stored much more widely dispersed than seemed to be the case in Beirut?

The people who need to think ...don't think.
Ammonia nitrate if stored in bulk over time heats up...resulting in fire and blast....that should have been a known by the authorities.

They said on the news someone was welding there. No doubt a combination of factors. I only saw the news an hour ago. I knew there was a blast, not just how huge it was.

Newcastle has an even bigger stockpile of explosives in Stockton. If it blew up, say goodbye to Newcastle.

And typically ... there's a bunch of Leb "Australians" over there whinging, whining and demanding our govt send a couple of planes immediately to evacuate them back to Australia! Well, stuff 'em! They choose to live over there like kings on their Australian pensions - while sub-letting their welfare housing back here. So they can stay there for all I care. They did the same thing during the 2006 Lebanon war when the ADF had to evacuate over 5,300 of them and over 1,300 foreign nationals from the Lebanese ports of Beirut and Tyre. As far as I'm concerned, if they choose to live there they can suffer the consequences! F*** 'em!

Just to throw a few facts out there. Lebanon is not an "agreement" country in terms of Australia's social welfare obligations, so the only payment that could be made to Australian Citizens who reside in Lebanon is the aged pension, and even that is dependant on how many years the applicant resided and worked in Australia. So the only people you could be referring to is elderly people, elderly Australians who happen to be living somewhere where there has just been a pretty significant disaster. And your reply to that is "fuck them"? That's pretty un-Australian Stellar.

Newcastle has an even bigger stockpile of explosives in Stockton. If it blew up, say goodbye to Newcastle. I said goodbye to Newcastle decades ago. As for Stellar’s rant about expat Australians living in Lebanon on Australian pensions with inverted commas around “Australians”, how many Brits live here and draw UK pensions? My late Dad drew benefits via the Netherlands consulate in Sydney because of his service during WW2. In fact the consulates of many of the countries of origin of long term migrants to Australia, as part of the consular services that they provide to their nationals and ex-nationals who live here in their retirement, function as conduits for the disbursement of entitlements that migrants can access from their home countries. I lived in Europe after my retirement for a while and lived on my Australian superannuation. It cuts both ways. One of Australia’s best known authors, the novelist David Malouf, is of Lebanese descent. I understand he lives in Italy along with thousands of Australian expats many of whom are of Anglo extraction. Joe Hockey is of Lebanese descent. He lives in the US. Draws a very nice Australian parliamentary pension. Former Premier of Victoria Steve Bracks is of Lebanese descent. I’d imagine as a retired Premier he’d be on a very comfortable pension. Thank you taxpayers. He went on to consult for the government of East Timor for a number of years. Dunno about the remuneration he’d have got from the East Timorese. Being such a basket case country I’d like to think he did it pro bono but I have no idea and no way of knowing. However I’m sure he would have continued to receive his Premier’s pension. Does that make him, and Hockey and Malouf another “Leb ‘Australian’” This racism of yours Stellar, I’ve been reading your posts for years and it doesn’t seem to make you very happy.

Bilal Skaf en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_gang_rapesThat's their thank you and up yours to Australia for giving their parents refuge from worn torn Lebanon.... We had friends from Lebanon. We gave them jobs after they got out of jail for heroin dealing.

Younger brother of Skaf
VVVV Wikipedia.
"Mohammed Skaf, younger brother of Bilal Skaf, was one of the gang rapists. He was sentenced to 32 years for his role in the gang rapes, but also had his sentence reduced on appeal, to 19 years with a non-parole period of 11 years. However, on 28 July 2006, he received an additional 15 years, with a minimum of seven and a half years over the Gosling Park attack. Mohammed Skaf will now be eligible for release on parole from 1 July 2019.[6] Skaf showed no remorse for his crimes, making sexually inappropriate remarks to female staff at the Kariong Juvenile Justice Centre where he was incarcerated and continued to blame his victims for initially agreeing to go with him because "they came out with us as soon as I asked them."[13] His parole was denied in February 2020, with The State Parole Authority mentioning that "it appears that he still blames the victims for his offending, has no victim empathy and refuses to take responsibility for his actions""
They should have been executed for raping minors.

Bilal Skaf - Australian of Lebanese extraction: rapist and murderer and in the slammer serving a very long and well deserved sentence.
Joe Hockey- Australian of Lebanese extraction: former Treasurer in the Australian government, former Australian Ambassador in Washington, businessman in Washington;
Marie Bashir- Australian of Lebanese extraction: former Governor of NSW; Companion of the Order of Australia, former Chancellor of the University of Sydney, distinguished academic career in medicine and author
The late Sir Nicholas Shehadie - Australian of Lebanese extraction: former Lord Mayor of Sydney, distinguished career as Australian sportsman, captain of Australian Rugby Union team, President of the Australian Rugby Union
David Malouf - Australian of Lebanese extraction: distinguished writer of Australian novels, short stories and poetry, winner of the Booker Prize for literature as well as a string of other awards
Yes I agree we drew the short straw with the Skafs but Australia has done very well out of Lebanese migration. I should also mention a fruit & veg shop in Wingham run by a Lebanese family named Kaleel when I was in high school in the 1960s and a local dairy farm when I was growing up on the NSW North Coast run by a Lebanese family called Said (pronounced “say-eed”.).
Stellar’s racism is bitter and twisted but yours, Caskur, is downright loopy.
