This is a very lengthy article which I’m only partway through but which I’d like to finish. I just thought I might “park” the link to it here on the Religion Board so I can come back to it later. It’s written by a former priest who has become a critic of the Catholic priesthood as an institution and calls for its abolition. He doesn’t do this out of any rejection of faith. In fact quite the contrary. One is struck by the man’s deep and abiding Christian faith. It is in fact his faith which drives his call for the abolition of the Catholic priesthood. I can’t examine his argument in any detail because I’ve only read part of the article. But he’s got my attention! Thoughtful constructive contributions are welcome. Smartarse posts from paleo atheist trolls will be ignored. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/06/to-save-the-church-dismantle-the-priesthood/588073/

I hope to read it but cannot at present - Internet data here in Grenfell is dismally slow even though there is good phone signal.

Sometimes victims never say a word - not to anyone ever - they feel shame as if somehow they were guilty or complicit in the acts. It was/is and always will be a criminal act and even if the victims didn't complain it would be still just as criminal..

"the bishops dutifully employed watchwords such as transparency and repentance, yet they established no new structures of prevention and accountability. "
Herein lieth the problem.
