Galileo did not discover the earth was round.
People actually knew the earth was round 1500 years prior to Galileo. It was coined by Aristotle in 300 BC, who observed the lunar eclipse and understood it was the Earth that came in between the Sun and the Moon. (It was a circular shadow, which indicated it to him that the Earth was round.) Also, at the horizon, the hull of a ship disappears first and then the top part which clearly indicated that the earth was round. The position of the North star(a star that has a fixed position above the north pole) in Greece and again noticed the position of it in Egypt. He noticed that as he moved north, the north star appeared to be overhead. At the equator, the north star appeared to lie near the horizon and in the southern hemisphere, it doesn't appear since it goes below the horizon. From this, he validated that the earth is round.
Galileo only discovered the other planets didn't revolve around the earth--that's all.
