Occam I realise you're rather caught up right now but I thought I'd share with you a French language series I stumbled across on Netflix called "The Churchmen". Its French title is "Ainsi soient-ils" which channels the French for "amen" and makes it plural. I originally watched the first couple of episodes with low expectations but progressively got hooked. I think it's a wonderful series. Here's a summary:
The Churchmen, originally released in France as Ainsi soient-ils and winner of The Best Film at the International Catholic Film Festival is an intense drama about five young candidates for the priesthood who arrive at Paris' Capuchin Seminary to begin their training. As they prepare to take their vows, each will see their commitment to the cross tested and whether they can withstand temptations from outside the seminary walls and from their own hidden passions.
It's a warts-and-all portrayal of the experience as a seminarian of five very different young men, each from different backgrounds. It's very respectful of spirituality and faith and at the same time portrays the characters not as one-dimensional out of touch god-botherers but as flawed human beings each with different motivations and backgrounds. The fact that they're each "running away" from something at least as much as they're "running towards" in no way invalidates their faith and prayerfulness. To give you a sense of the scope of difference of backgrounds, one is a convicted murderer who has served his sentence, another is the son of a rich financier who's into fraud and embezzlement and is appalled that his son is going into the priesthood and a third is what the French would call a pretty boy "puceau" which is their disparaging term for a virginal young man who's totally innocent and has never been laid. No more spoilers! If you come across it on whatever system you have over there, it really is worth some binge watching!
The usual trolls are going to leap on this thread but let's not feed them. This is just for your information. I'll let Fat know about it as well.
