Taika Waititi's other big feature film, “ Boy” was also a little rippa. He's from up the East Coast (way up north of Gisborne), from an area where the population is 99% Maori and where the most common language is Te Reo ( Maori), with English and Italian being the second-equal languages. Yeah, I know that sounds weird, but the old soldiers of C Company, 28th Maori Battalion, returned from fighting in Italy during WWII speaking fluent Italian and they not only kept it up, but taught the language to their children and grandchildren. Half the Maori folks up the coast speak Italian, which tends to astound the occasional Italian backpackers who venture around highway 35 between Opotiki and Gisborne. If you haven't seen “ Boy”, get hold of a copy of it (you can purchase it in Oz from HERE) and watch it. Another hard-case movie by Taika Waititi is “What We Do In The Shadows”....it's a horror/comedy movie set in Wellington involving socialite vampires.
