A new study from the US National Library of Medicine examines the addictive qualities of food, and their relationship with addictive eating behaviours.
Researchers identified addictive foods from about 500 students who completed the Yale Food Addiction Scale, designed to measure if someone has a food addiction.A new study suggests that cheese may be as addictive as certain drugs. While pizza topped the food list, cheese was also ranked high because of an ingredient called casein, a protein found in all milk products. When it is digested, casein releases opiates called casomorphins.
“[Casomorphins] really play with the dopamine receptors and trigger that addictive element,” registered dietitian Cameron Wells told Mic.
Certain foods were found to be more addictive than others because of how they are processed. If a food item is more processed, it's more likely to be associated with addictive eating behaviours.www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/well-good/73374998
