THIS article explains how to prevent Edge from installing and becoming your default browser while carrying out the upgrade to Windows 10. Any time you allow the default “Express Installation” option to occur whenever you do a major upgrade is ALWAYS asking for trouble. I always go for the Custom Install option and go through everything with a fine tooth-comb, carefully selecting what I want. And in case you're wondering, no, I haven't upgraded to Windows 10 yet. It is on the “to-do” list, but I haven't got around to it, and anyway the free upgrade is available for a year, which gives time for Microsoft to sort out a few of the bugs which inevitably occur. I'll probably wait until at least December to allow for some of those issues to be discovered and sorted out.

I still haven't got around to upgrading to Windows 10, but I have got a brand-new high-spec HP laptop which I purchased from JB-HiFi in Palmerston North during the Boxing Day sales (not actually on Boxing Day itself, but a few days afterwards), with a 15.6" HD Display, a 512GB SDD instead of a hard-drive, a 2.3GHz Intel processor, top quality graphics chip, a shitload of DDR3 SDRAM and all the other usual bells & whistles; and with Windows 10 installed. It is still in the box, sealed up just as it came from the manufacturer. I didn't actually need a new computer but the sale price was so good that I purchased it anyway and chucked the box in the bottom of my wardrobe for when I needed it.
Well....I think today might be the day. I'm going to head down-town (which is just down the end of my one-block residential street) to do a few things, then when I return home I'll cut the sealing tape on the box and extract the new HP computer and fire it up; and introduce myself to Windows 10 as I spend the rest of the day loading additional software and updates onto it and spend some time setting it up exactly how I like my computers to be.
As for the Windows 8.1 equipped computer I'm using at the moment? Once I get the new computer up & running, I'll remove the hard-drive from the old computer and replace it with a brand-new blank hard-drive (I've got a couple of spare “brand-new” hard-drives in my “bits box”), load the original software & drivers package from the recovery media onto the replacement hard-drive, then after giving the computer a good clean (inside and out), I'll donate it to one of the kids in my neighbourhood.

Well, I most definitely don't like Edge, so I activated Internet Explorer, as well as also installing Slimbrowser, Firefox and Chrome, so I've now got five browsers on the new computer. Plus, I also decided I didn't like the photograph-viewing software that comes with Windows 10, so I've now got Windows Photo Viewer downloaded and installed as well. Plus the earlier version of Windows Media Player. All of that earlier software appears to work okay with Windows 10. I even downloaded and installed Gadgets (remember those? they came with Windows Vista) because I like having the clock and the calendar on my desktop.
As for the rest of it, I'm getting too old to be bothered with new operating systems, but I've got it 90% sussed, and no doubt I'll work out the rest over the next week or two.

Windows 10 wants a lot of PI, so if you don't feel like going to each and every setting to disable it from having all that info about you, you can down load Spybot Anti-beacon. Spybot Anti-Beacon is a standalone tool which was designed to block and stop the various tracking (telemetry) issues present in Windows 10. It has since been modified to block similar tracking functionality in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. Anti-Beacon is small, simple to use, and is provided free of charge. It was created to address the privacy concerns of users of Windows 10 who do not wish to have information about their PC usage sent to Microsoft. Simply clicking “Immunize” on the main screen of Anti-Beacon will immediately disable any known tracking features included by Microsoft in the operating system www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/

I hate the way the Windows updates now works, you more or less are forced to accept them automatically. You can't easily determine what they are for prior to them installing. Which is really annoying for those of us who are on pre-paid plans or on otherwise limited budgets. I have just acquired a new laptop, and since last Wednesday (the 3rd),I have blown almost 3 gb, due to win10 constantly "upgrading" without giving me any option to choose whether to accept them or not. It's so damn annoying, and not just to my hip-pocket.
