A well known piece by Sergi Rachmaninoff for orchestra and piano....
Now how is this for sheer genius (and maybe a bit of virtuoso madness) with the same piece....

Rachmaninoff....wasn't it a piece by him that finally put David Helfgott over the edge?

Yep....Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.3, which was performed by Orchestra Wellington earlier this year with Michael Houston playing the piano. The concert was in the Michael Fowler Centre, then the following day they repeated it in Masterton Town Hall. I was at both concerts, at which they also performed Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.1, the first of a subscription series throughout this year where they are performing all six of Tchaikovsky's symphonies, with each one teamed up with a piano concerto by a major Russian composer.
I've got the movie Shine on BluRay disc, although I haven't got around to watching it yet.
BTW....check out the two video clips above. Watch the piano and orchestra version, then check out the amazing video of Cameron Carpenter as he takes you through what he is doing with the piece in a series of concerts (he was booked to perform the first concert in China about a week ago) with various symphony orchestras over the next year or so.
I shared half a bottle of single malt with Cameron Carpenter a couple of years ago when he was performing in Napier and I discovered we were staying in adjacent hotel rooms. He's quite a shy character when you first meet him, but then when he starts to open up, you realise what a genius he really is, although he is probably a little bit insane as well.

You have to be a little insane to have that much talent. I think it goes hand in hand.
