Any scope for live theatre on this board? I've just beeen to see a South African play, The Suit, at the Dunstan Playhouse here in Adelaide. It's a production by Peter Brook and it's the first time the play has been performed in Australia. It's based on an apartheid-era novel which was banned at the time - both the novel and the play.
Basically it's set in a South African township, before Soweto, back in the 1950s. A young black worker comes home to find his wife in bed with her lover who escapes through the window in his underpants and in his haste has to leave his suit behind. The husband forces his wife to treat the suit as an honoured house guest and the suit becomes a constant toxic reminder of the wife's infidelity. The themes are revenge, moral blackmail and a refusal to allow a wound to heal. I won't say how the play ends but the acting is outstanding and the music is superb. I loved it.
