I agree with you, Stellar: it's diet and exercise. I had a gym membership up until the end of last year and alas it became an economic casualty of the financial planning for my upcoming overseas trip that happens from the end of June until mid-September. I regret it and I miss the work-outs. I used to be a good swimmer back in the days when I was young, 6'4", lean, mean and dangerous(!!) instead of late 60s, struggling with weight etc etc. The weight piled on when I quit smoking quite a few years ago and it's only now that I'm seriously dealing with the weight issue. So in a way I'm still dealing with the aftermath of a nicotine habit! My goal is to get down to 100kg. The GP says ideally 95kg but if I successfully reduce my weight from a high of 122kg which is what it was last October down to 110kg now and keep going down to 100kg I'll be a very happy man.
The other night I was at a dinner party and at the end of the meal the hostess trotted out the triple brie cheeses and the blue vein ... It was painful to have to say "No thanks!" I couldn't make it stick so I helped myself. To my surprise I found that after six months of a low carb diet with lots of fresh fruit & veg with things like cheese a no-no (I miss good cheddar cheese!) my metabolism seems to be changing and I can't take a lot of rich food. So I could only nibble at the triple brie and the blue vein. Seems like a positive feedback loop is at work here.
I like the swimming idea and I should take it up. I'm moving over to near North Adelaide in about 6 weeks for my final year in Adelaide before I move back over to NSW so I'll be handy to the Aquatic Centre they have there - a wonderful indoor swimming facility, great for swimming laps in winter. So I'll seriously check it out!

I've lost 16 kilos now and gave up smoking too...6 weeks, no smokes. I'm using Nicorettes... If anyone is struggling... these are good. There is really no excuse not to give up smoking these days with aids like this around. They also help you to lose weight.

Well done, Cas. I lost 14 kg last year but that was with the aid of a diet program. ( very good I found) but that you have done this by making serious lifestyle changes alone is worthy of congratulations Now as for getting off the Nicorette mints....try popping a regular ( sugar free!) mint occasionally and increase the number over time while reducing the Nicorette...may just just work over time

I also have Eclipse ice sugarless gum and do use it between nicorettes. I'm actually weening off nicorettes. I also use Stevia made mints from a brand called Double D.... they are good too. There is really no excuse for lifestyle changes with so many aids about. Imma gunna be a lifestyle guru soon....
