Just sickening and I hope if he is found guilty he rots in jail for life and without parole. Rape, murder charges likely in Meagher case27 September 2012 Victorian Homicide Squad detectives are expected to charge a 41-year-old Coburg man with the rape and murder of ABC worker Jill Meagher. Ms Meagher was last seen in the early hours of Saturday morning after a night out with work mates. Police have held a late night media briefing following the arrest of the Coburg man on Thursday afternoon and say they expect to lay charges in an out of sessions hearing later this evening. ABC Melbourne journalist Hamish Fitzsimmons attended the briefing, where much of what was said remains off the record. He told ABC's Lateline that CCTV vision made public on Wednesday has played a major role in the arrest. In the vision Ms Meagher can be seen talking to a man wearing a blue hooded jumper as she walked along Sydney Road in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police had been keen to speak to the man in the hoodie over the disappearance. Fitzsimmons says the arrest and likely charges are a shock for all involved in the case. "People within the ABC were still hopeful and thoughts go to Jill's family and her husband Tom," he said. Police say they are not searching for any one else at this stage and they also said the extensive social media campaign to find Ms Meagher had helped in the investigation. www.abc.net.au/news/2012-09-27/rape2c-murder-charges-likely-in-meagher-case/4284826?WT.svl=news0 Backpacker tells of terrifying sexual assault1 August 2012 A dutch backpacker has told of a terrifying ordeal where she was lured into a car and sexually assaulted by man at St Kilda. The 27-year-old was walking along Carlisle Street at around 2.30 in the morning on July 15 when a red car pulled up beside her. The driver told her she was being followed and urged her to get into the car. He then drove her to a laneway locked the doors and attacked her. She managed to escape but says she felt her life was in the balance. www.3aw.com.au/blogs/breaking-news-blog/backpacker-tells-of-terrifying-sexual-assault/20120801-23eyu.html

Have they found her body? They might have trouble getting a murder conviction otherwise. I realise that feelings are running high over this case (is the suspect a Muslim. btw? Or a refugee who made it here on a leaky boat? Or a native-born bogan. Just asking ...!) but if the cops go gangbusters because of the pressure of public opinion and charge the guy only to see the prosecutuion case go down in flames in court because they hadn't done their homework, doubtless we'll see another spate of posts expressing outrage about how ineffective the courts are yadda yadda yadda.
I'm sure the shock jocks are in there stirring the pot on this one, but this is where the pressure on the justice system from populist shock jocks and tabloid hysteria demanding a result yesterday can botch the whole process. Let the cops do their job properly. If the poor girl is dead they have to find her body. I understood from ABC News Radio that the arrested suspect isn't co-operating.

I didn't see the poll. There hasn't even been a trial yet and I don't know of any case where a murder conviction has been obtained without the body of the murder victim having been found. So the DPP is a long way from even preparing a case yet.
As for the death penalty. Fergeddit. No State government in Australia ever since the last execution in 1967, Ronald Ryan, has come near the death penalty. Not even Bjelke Petersen would touch it. It shouldn't even be up there as an option.

Sadistic rapeFor these rapists, they have a sexual association with anger and power so that aggression and the infliction of pain itself is eroticized. For this rapist, sexual excitement is associated with the inflicting of pain upon their victim. The offender finds the intentional maltreatment of his victim intensely gratifying and takes pleasure in the victim's torment, anguish, distress, helplessness, and suffering; he/she finds the victim's struggling with him/her to be an erotic experience. Sadistic rape usually involves extensive, prolonged torture and restraint. Sometimes it can take on ritualistic or other bizarre qualities. The rapist may use some type of instrument or foreign object to penetrate his/her victim. Sexual areas of the victim's body become a specific focus of injury or abuse. The sadistic rapist's assaults are deliberate, calculated and preplanned. They will often wear a disguise or will blindfold their victims. Prostitutes or other people whom they perceive to be "promiscuous" are often the sadistic rapist's targets. The victims of a sadistic rapist may not survive the attack. For some offenders, the ultimate satisfaction is gained from murdering the victim. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of_sexual_violence#Groth_typologyAbsolutely disgusting what this man has done!

Very unfortunately, Larry Pickering has published details of this case which could quite easily compromise the prosecution.

Have to agree with Earl Gray there, Matty. There are three types of rape, and I posted this one. Read through each type of rape before judging me for posting it. This man is a monster, totally depraved and void of any humanity.

Have to agree with Earl Gray there, Matty. There are three types of rape, and I posted this one. Read through each type of rape before judging me for posting it. This man is a monster, totally depraved and void of any humanity. No, he's not a monster. That's the scary bit. Most murderers aren't monsters. We want them to be monsters because if we can somehow demonstrate that they're not "normal" (i.e. they're not like us who most definitely are "normal" people) and that they're some sort of freak - which is what a monster is: monster (n.) early 14c., "malformed animal or human, creature afflicted with a birth defect," from O.Fr. monstre, mostre "monster, monstrosity" (12c.), and directly from L. monstrum "divine omen, portent, sign; abnormal shape; monster, monstrosity," figuratively "repulsive character, object of dread, awful deed, abomination,"then we can comfort ourselves that this guy is a one-off. But what if criminals like this Coburg guy aren't that freakish after all? After all, one of the males shown in the CCTV footage saw himself when it was shown on TV and did the right thing by going to the police straight away. Did you notice what he'd said about the guy with the hoodie? He said he was "nondescript". Not a monster at all. The really scary thing about people who commit acts that revolt the rest of us is how much like the rest of us they are. I don't want the guy to get a bullet in the head or a needle in his arm or a noose around his neck. I want a proper trial in which after due process he's found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. How old is he now? 41? I hope he lives into his 80s - in jail. From what I hear of other big name killers who are still serving their sentences, life isn't a bowl of cherries in the Big House. Martin Bryant apparently suffers from depression and is on suicide watch. Don't let him top himself!! If the very act of living is a punishment for people like that, then let them be condemned to that sort of life.

I don't support executing him, but I do believe if and when he is found guilty he is released into the general prison population.

At age 41 does he have a police record? I dunno and neither do you. We're told he lives in Coburg. I'm not a Melburnian but I have a vague idea where Coburg and Brunswick are. I doubt the accused guy lived on the street. Is he employed? Into drugs? I'm not trying to find excuses for the guy or any sort of mitigating circumstances. I'm definitely not being a bleeding heart about it either. If the guy is found guilty I hope the court throws the book at him and he rots in jail for the rest of his life. Where I differ from you, Matt, is that I want his life in jail to be a very long one. It's not a case of "Jillian got death but this scum got life with board & lodging". It seems to me that he spent the past 41 years being "nondescript". I think I'm nondescript. I think I look just like the odinary bloke that I am. If I go to a crowded venue like a shopping mall or an airport people look straight through me. How many "nondescript" people do you see? I know, you see women in burqas or men with swarthy complexions who are followed at a respectful distance by their burqa-clad wives and you give them the hate stare. I guess we're not going to agree on "nondescript". But this guy doesn't have a swarthy complexion. His name seems impeccably Anglo to me: Adrian Bayley. If I met a 41 year old guy named Adrian Bayley here in Adelaide who had a regular job, supported the Crows, had a few beers with his mates at the pub, took his kids to Saturday morning footy practice or netball practice and shagged his wife I wouldn't blink an eyelid. Hard to accept, innit!! That guys like Adrian Bayley who up until now had been passed off as "nondescript" would end up charged with a crime that horrifies the community. Of course they'd want to portray him as a monster!! To confront the mirror that the Adrian Bayleys of this world hold up to the rest of us is just too much of a challenge! More comforting for the rest of us to write him off as a "monster"

At age 41 does he have a police record? I dunno and neither do you. Well actually.... that is now public knowledge, you only have to go look at newspaper archives. However, the local newspaper in Geelong which reported on previous court proceedings has removed those archived articles from its website this morning.

Very unfortunately, Larry Pickering has published details of this case which could quite easily compromise the prosecution. pickeringpost.com/article/accused-killer-adrian-bayley-spent-most-of-his-life-in-jail/623I remember he used to be a cartoonist for the Canberra Times in the mid 1970s. He actually stood as a Liberal candidate for the ACT seat of Fraser in the 1974 elections. He didn't even come close to winning since the seat is rock solid Labor. Given the tawdry and shabby nature of his cartoons it's a reasonable conclusion that the electors of Fraser got it overwhelmingly right. What stands out in my memory of his candidacy is a public meeting I attended during that 1974 election campaign at which Pickering was supported by a Liberal "heavyweight". Guess who! None other than Don Chipp who was still a Liberal back then. His departure from the Liberals was a dummy spit because Fraser wouldn't give him a ministerial gig, and the Australian Democrats which ensued was a clever case of niche marketing. I never believed it when Chipp claimed the moral high ground.

As in nudge nudge wink wink say no more. As you would no doubt be aware Jody, (and we are reminded on every post)... ip Logged Our IP address is logged with every post we make on this board. It is important, therefore, to be aware of the laws regarding comments when a case hits the Law Courts. Every one of us can be tracked down via our IP address, so we need to be careful about what we post. That's why I am reminding people posting on this topic that speculation about the case could have serious consequences - it is not restricted to fb pages or twitter. I have not disclosed anything, even though I saved a lot of stuff before those news websites deleted their old content on him. I wont post it and wont comment on the specifics of the articles.

Jill went to school in Rossmoyne in Perth - so she was a Perth girl. That is false and a lie. Both her and her husband moved to Australia only a few years ago.

I don't think he lied. The media stories at the beginning clearly got it wrong. I read that she was from Ireland too. The media are known to get things very mixed up.
