Why did the police NOT get their glocks out and shoot them? One warning to stop, then fire. The guy that went into the water could have been shot. Note to cops: THAT IS WHAT YOUR GUN IS FOR! Sex offender found, but one still on the runApril 23, 201 Two dangerous sex offenders waded through a swamp, believed to be infested with crocodiles, after escaping from a prison camp. Algana Amos James Tiers, 26, and Tyrone Speechly, 25, escaped from Townsville contingency accommodation - similar to a half-way house but on prison grounds - after cutting off their GPS tracking devices on Monday night. On Tuesday it was reported the pair were in bush scrub in the northern Townsvile suburb of Pallarenda. www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/sex-offender-found-but-one-still-on-the-run-20130423-2ib89.html

I can't for the life of me understand how two violent sex offenders end up at a medium security prison farm. And how ineffectual are the GPS bracelets if they can be cut off so easily? This on top of two grubs escaping from a boot camp.

I am pretty certain that a police officer's gun is only to be used in a life or death situation - either the officer's life is at risk or a member of the public.
I agree with Grim that violent offenders should not be held in a prison farm without adequate security.
Probably the best result would have been for the offenders to have been taken by those crocs in the swamp.

He was right there. What a woose. But Earl, I'm not sure how potential crocodile attack fits into adherence to OH&S policies in the workplace these days? If he'd been wearing a Hi-Viz vest I'd say keep going mate, chase the Australoid as far as you like into the swamp, you should be safe!

The water is infested with crocodiles, the police have no reason to go in it! Are you trying to tell us that the cops are gutless scaredy cats, yet the sex offenders are brave enough to not be scared of mere crocodiles?

The escapee will die soonnr or later. It's only a matter of time before karma and he, shake hands.

odd The escapee isn't very smart. Well, considering that he out witted the coppers that were chasing him, how stupid are the cops ? Was he injured ? If not we could be waiting 50 odd years before he shuffles off this mortal coil.

The ignorance and sheer lack of logic from some on this board never ceases to amaze me.
Phil, police have no problems 'getting their feet wet'. However common sense and not putting YOURSELF at unnecessary risk is instilled in police. If the officer survived without being attacked or taken, he probably would have been suspended or at the very least given a written warning. Its the same reason why high speed chases are rarely allowed.

Its the same reason why high speed chases are rarely allowed. Oh Really ? Road block crash driver sentenced
A young man who sped a stolen car 200km along the Hume Freeway and crashed into cars whose drivers were ordered by police to form a road block has been sentenced to 17 months in youth detention. Ashley Steel, 20, was under the effects of the drugs ice and cannabis when he reached speeds of up to 204km/h along stretches of the Hume Freeway between Glenrowan and Melbourne's northern suburbs on May 12 last year. Police saw Steel driving at 155km/h south of Benalla about 10.15am that day and attempted to intercept the stolen Holden Commodore, but called off the pursuit. The police air wing located the car just after 11am near Tallarook. The County Court heard on Wednesday that Steel weaved in and out of lanes overtaking other motorists and also drove in the emergency lane, before police ordered drivers to form a road block near the Epping exit, where Steel hit four cars and was arrested.
Some of the drivers had children in their cars, while one woman whose car was hit said in a victim impact statement she suffered whiplash and had been left distressed by the incident.
The incident was the first time in Victoria that civilians were used to stop someone evading police. The officer who made the decision to do so was not punished, however Chief Commissioner Ken Lay later said the officers involved failed to follow normal procedures Read more: www.theage.com.au/victoria/road-block-crash-driver-sentenced-20130424-2iecb.html#ixzz2RSrzmVSvI guess deliberately endangering the lives of civilians doesn't count, does it Salem ? As I said in another thread, you really don't think your argument through, do you. Face, mirror, look.

They have caught the second one in Mt Isa. Thank God. Hopefully there is no more of this GPS nonsense... they cannot be trusted, they should now be thrown in a maximum security prison.

they should now be thrown in a maximum security prison. Maximum security confinement is extremely expensive.
So.....you want it, you volunteer to pay for it.
But don't expect other people to pay for what you want!

Matty lets look a the outcome from this event.
1 escapee was recaptured within 24 hours.
The other was captured within about 72 hours.
Things like GPS bracelets are just a part of the suite of measures taken to mitigate the risk of escapes (and they do play an important part in as much as they give (if they are tampered with) the authorities a "start point" in an escape attempt).
Incidently, NSW Corrective Services record for escapes is far worse then that of Queensland.
Lastly, you do have a tendency for making silly, uninformed statements so I'll make allowances for your "they should have shot him" brain fart. Corrective Service Officers are permitted to use firearms to prevent an escape. Police aren't (or rather their rules of engagement are far more restrictive and prevent them from firing their weapons except if defending human life.
As for entering the water? I spent a bit of time up in Darwin last year and went to the Croc Park up there. You'd be amazed at how shallow the water needs to be to totally conceal very, very large crocs. Townsville is about 600km's north of the southernmost point at which Crocs are found so you'd be pretty foolhardy to go running into swamps.

Oh rubbish! To chase that guy into a croc infested swamp would be stupid. If he did, and they fell about in the water as he tried to make an arrest, don't you think the splashing would attract every croc in the area??
