The man who got tried for HERESY in 20th-century NZ…

Professor Sir Lloyd Geering was tried for heresy by the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1967.

Absolutely unbelievable that this sort of primitive, dark-ages clap-trap went on during the second half of the 20th century, but sadly it did.

Lloyd Geering is now 99 years old (he turns 100 next February), but he looks bloody marvellous for his age.

He featured on TVNZ's Sunday current affairs programme last evening (Sunday), and it is available to view online until the end of this week.

I guess Lloyd Geering got the last laugh....he has outlived (by many years, and decades in some cases) all of his accusers who put him on trial back in 1967.

Lloyd has also out-lived two of his three wives (he remarried after each of the first two wives died).

He has just moved into a huge new multi-building, multi-level retirement village right next to the railway line I drive trains along at Petone.

I saw him standing on the balcony of one of the units facing the railway line the other day as I was passing, so I presume that is his unit.

Well.....I have an actual memory of a heresy trial taking place in the country I have always called home.

It was big news in the newspapers and on the television news at the time.

And on heresy trials in Australia, since you bring that up, we have our very own Inquisition in Australia which enforces a peculiarly Australian orthodoxy, conducts witch hunts, public demonisation of heretics, public denunciation and public character assassination to the point of hounding the heretic out of the country. And even then will continue to denounce, condemn, vilify and assassinate their character when the gormless target of the Inquisition's wrath is 20 000 km away on the other side of the world. But have they actually put anybody on trial on a charge of HERESY?

Although I was at high school when the Lloyd Geering heresy trial was happening, I can still clearly remember feeling that New Zealand had been made into a laughing stock of the western world by those fundy-mental Presbyterians who indulged in that dark-ages wankery.

Mind you, in hindsight, I probably wouldn't be too surprised if a heresy trial was held in the USA, because that country is full of fundy-mental religious nutters & kooks.

Strewth KTJ how the fuck would I know anything about heresy trials in Australia and why the fuck should I care? You made some sort of ignorant reference to the dark ages with absolutely no historical basis in fact. A word of friendly advice, KTJ, there are two subjects you should avoid getting into a debate about: the first is history which is something you know diddly squat about and the second is linguistics/language issues. Put it this way: if you were to pronounce on anything related to rail transport (and I love trains) I wouldn't dream of challenging your knowledge and expertise. I'd defer to you utterly. It's kinda the same for me with history and linguistics. We're talking postgraduate level here.

So. Back to heresy trials. A heresy is a deviation from orthodoxy in doctrine that incurs the displeasure and condemnation of those who are the guardians of orthodoxy. In Australia we languish under the tyranny of an orthodoxy called ANZAC. The orthodoxy is that ANZAC should be viewed in the approved way which has been narrowly defined by the RSL -who see themselves as the high priests of this orthodoxy. Anyone who deviates from this ANZAC orthodoxy and dares to put forward a dissenting view is deemed a heretic in the foulest terms. So from the high priests we move to the Inquisition that deals with ANZAC heretics and there are two arms to this Inquisition: the first arm is the tabloid media,largely run by the Murdoch hate media both print and electronic, and the second arm consists of Coalition politicians operating out of the Coward's Castle security of Parliament where they can say what they want immune frombeing sued for defamation.

There have been lots of heretics that have been vilified and crucified in this way. The latest was Yasmin Abdel-Magied. I stand by what I said about her. She was deemed a heretic and pursued, demonized, vilified, traduced and witch hunted to the point of fleeing out of the country to the UK. And all for committing the heresy of deviating from the ANZAC orthodoxy. I put it to you that constituted a witch hunt and heresy show trial that outdoes for hatefulness and viciousness anything meted out by the Presbyterians. We know about heresy and Inquisitions in this country. We're proven masters at persecuting heretics. Ask Yasmin.
